Waterproof footwear has been around since the mid-19th century. Breathable, lightweight, waterproof footwear? Well, that’s another story. When GORE-TEX Brand first entered the boot scene in the 1980s, the brand’s waterproof technology was a massive leap forward from the wellies and gumboots of the day. Finally, boots made with GORE-TEX Technology offered a breathable option for keeping feet dry outdoors.

The GORE-TEX Membrane changed the game for hiking, snow travel, and other heavy-duty outdoor activities. But adventurers for adventurers in need of more nimble footwear, waterproof meant compromise — protection at the expense of performance. That is, until GORE-TEX Brand dropped its latest innovation.

GORE-TEX Invisible Fit Footwear offers the same level of reliable waterproofing the brand is known for in a lighter, more flexible format that’s compatible with everything from trail runners to everyday sneakers. Sound too good to be true? We sat down with Mark Aboff, global product manager for GORE-TEX Brand, to learn more about the technology that makes using lightweight and waterproof in the same sentence a possibility and gives your grandparents’ original GORE-TEX Brand boots a run for their money.

What Is Invisible Fit Technology?

Traditional GORE-TEX Footwear integration uses a bootie construction to add waterproof material to nearly finished shoes. Picture a waterproof sock sliding into the shoe. While this method provides virtually leakproof construction, the bootie adds bulk and affects the fit of the shoe. GORE-TEX Invisible Fit Footwear takes a different approach.

“Rather than make a separate bootie that gets integrated into another shoe, we asked, ‘Why don’t we just combine it directly with the upper using lamination?’” says Aboff.

By bonding the GORE-TEX laminate directly to the shoe’s upper material, the technology removes extra layers. The result is a construction that feels like a standard running shoe — flexible, lightweight, and natural — but still delivers GORE-TEX Brand-level waterproof performance.

Try the Brooks Ghost 17 GTX

A neutral daily trainer blending Brooks’ cushy DNA LOFT v3 midsole with a bonded GORE-TEX Invisible Fit Footwear laminate. Lightweight, flexible, and smooth-riding, it handles puddles and rain-slick roads without the heavy feel of old-school waterproof shoes

The Makings of a Big Idea

At Gore, big ideas can come from anywhere. “That’s one of the things I like about Gore,” Aboff says. “If anybody has a good idea, they can bring it to the table. It could come from an engineer, from product management, or even sales — whoever is hearing from the customer.”

In the case of GORE-TEX Invisible Fit Footwear, the spark came from an R&D engineer working closely with factories and athletic brands. “He kept hearing, ‘Hey, when it comes to athletic shoes, we want something that fits and feels just like a traditional running shoe — but is still fully waterproof,’” Aboff explains. “That was really the spark for GORE-TEX Invisible Fit Footwear.”

From Inspiration to In-Store

At Gore, technologies are built as long-term platforms, not one-season experiments. GORE-TEX Invisible Fit Footwear had to work across multiple categories, from trail running to hiking and lifestyle shoes, and integrate with many factories and designs. That takes time.

“It’s not days, weeks, or months,” Aboff says. “It’s years that go into this kind of thing.” That time gives Gore a chance to rigorously test the new technology before it goes into production.

Try the Brooks Cascadia 19 GTX

Wet days on the trail? The women’s Cascadia 19 GTX helps take the hazard out of water hazards. It’s stable and adaptable with a waterproof GORE-TEX layer designed to make a splash.

“We start with materials: membranes and textiles,” Aboff explains. “If that’s not waterproof in the first place, don’t even try to make shoes from it.” The process isn’t always smooth. “Sometimes the first prototypes really don’t work well,” Aboff admits. “You have to change this and that, engineer the product, and make sure it delivers the performance we want.”

Once the materials pass the brand’s rigorous testing, they move to component and shoe-level testing, followed by real-world wear trials. In Gore’s labs, engineers put shoes through everything from centrifuge tests — literally spinning water-filled shoes to check for leaks — to wet flex testing, which repeatedly bends submerged shoes to simulate long-term use. Breathability is measured using a “sweating foot” model that mimics real perspiration.

“Nothing really beats throwing them in the field and trying to beat them up,” Aboff says. “Sometimes you get total disasters, and other times you get a product you can take to market.”

Try the HOKA Speedgoat GTX

A workhorse for sloppy, wet conditions, the Speedgoat 6 GTX is now even more comfortable with the addition of GORE-TEX Invisible Fit Footwear waterproof technology. The lighter, more flexible construction helps avoid pressure points while providing full protection for wet conditions.

OK, But What’s the Catch?

According to Aboff, there isn’t one. For runners who’ve sworn off waterproof shoes, citing stiffness, bulk, or added weight, Invisible Fit aims to change minds. Invisible Fit offers waterproof protection that keeps pace with how people actually move — whether that’s on the trail for a run or the sidewalk for the morning commute.

“We believe waterproofness adds a lot of value,” he says. “The goal for GORE-TEX Invisible Fit Footwear was to create a waterproof material that’s as light and breathable as possible, without asking consumers to compromise on fit. With Invisible Fit, you can have the same experience as you normally do with your typical shoes for running or everyday life, with the reliable waterproof protection you expect from the GORE-TEX Brand.”
