It’s the second stunning and bespoke BMW in as many years. The BMW Concept Speedtop is an elegant shooting brake based on the Skytop concept.
Revealed on the shores of Lake Como, at one of the world’s fanciest car gatherings, BMW will build a small run of this stunning and very special new design.
BMW Skytop Concept to Speedtop Reality
“A true BMW exudes dynamism and elegance even when it’s standing still,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design. “And that’s also the case with our new concept car.”
The Speedtop takes the V-shaped nose and ultra-thin headlights of the Skytop concept, which was also revealed at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, but in 2024. It’s a new take on the 8 Series design, adding a sense of speed and elegance not found in the original.
Once you get to the A-pillar, though, the design changes. The Skytop has an open roof above the cabin and a low trunklid. The BMW Concept Speedtop has more sheet metal and a hatch.
There’s Nothing Like a 2-Door Wagon
The roofline continues gently rearward before ending right around the rear edge of the back tires. From there, instead of a trunk, the BMW Concept Speedtop is a hatch. Think of it like a refined (and more expensive) take on the Z3-based BMW M Coupe from 1998 or the Z4 Coupe that followed in 2005 and you’ll be in the ballpark.
BMW finished the roof in a two-tone paint treatment. Floating Sundown Silver accents on a Floating Sunstone Maroon base is the opposite of the Skytop concept’s paintwork, and it is meant to help accent the different shape of this car.
2-Tone Leather Envelops Driver and Passenger
Likewise, the interior is finished in two shades. The Sundown Maroon leather flows across the dash and between the seats. It surrounds the driver and passenger, who sit on moonstone white leather.
It looks like a wagon, but the cargo area is still separated from the cockpit. A shelf opens and closes on brightly polished hinges to keep your bag out of sight. The rear is covered in leather, and BMW says it can hold “large items of luggage,” which, from BMW’s images, appears to mean a single bag. Possibly two carry-on bags, if you arrange them properly.
Two bags fit behind the seats, too — at least if you also buy the custom set made for the car. Handmade Italian leather manufacturer Schedoni has designed the luggage, a set of custom made-to-measure bags that fit behind the seats that are held in place with a set of leather straps.
Most Powerful V8 Stuffed in Small BMW Speedtop
BMW says that the Speedtop has the “most powerful V8 engine” it currently offers. That means some version of the S68 4.4L twin-turbo V8 found in cars like the M5 and X6 M. The most powerful version of that engine on sale today makes 617 horsepower (or 631 horsepower if you count the Alpina XB7 as a BMW), ensuring plenty of speed and performance to match the looks.
Last year’s Skytop was so popular that BMW is expanding the run of this year’s edition. BMW will build 70 copies of the Concept Speedtop instead of just 50. Orders are now open for buyers who want a chance at the most glamorous hatchback in the world.
