It was only six years ago that Rivian was playing with early prototypes of its first vehicle, the R1T, in South America. The adventure was filming and supporting the Long Way Up electric motorcycle expedition and film. On that trip, the company says it realized something important: “the further we push our vehicles, the more fun we can have.” From there Rivian designers, engineers, and adventure enthusiasts have been on all sorts of wild adventures around the globe, many times on their own dime and time. Adventure is baked into Rivian’s DNA and has attracted talented employees that like to…
New from Ostap Hel and Bestech is the incoming Duoz. Hel is always trying new things and the Duoz looks like a fusion between a fillet knife and an everyday carry flipper. To be clear, the fillet knife vibe is just that, a vibe. Like all Ostap Hel folders, the Duoz is clearly meant to go into the pocket and tackle day-to-day cutting chores, not prepare fish for the fryer. The sweeping, slender trailing point blade brings that maritime pattern to mind, but the compound grind screams modern user – as does the steel, 14C28N stainless, entry-level stuff that still…

Introduction Observations from the Russia-Ukraine War have revealed emergent tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) in the employment of small-unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS), which have proliferated across the battle space. Russian sUAS have become a significant and…

Wildfire season is still a few months away for Western states, but, in a sign of what may be to come, a wildfire is already wreaking havoc on National Park Service (NPS) land in Florida. On Feb. 22, a fire began in a part of Big Cypress National Preserve that’s about 20 miles from Naples, Fla. The fire has spread rapidly, and efforts to contain it have proved unsuccessful. The preserve is a major tourism driver and home to many rare species. The Fire According to press releases from the NPS, the National Fire began on Feb. 22. It grew…
ZeroTech’s compact Thrive HD 1-4 Prism might just be the best bargain of the year for an everyday carbine optic.Think of it as a variable-power ACOG. Taking up about as much space as a TA31, ZeroTech’s newest model gives users a true 1x bottom end, with just enough magnification to consistently hit torso-sized targets out to 600 yards in field conditions. Best of all, it does it at a very affordable price.Sitting atop this well-used AR, the Thrive HD 1-4 seems right at home as a jack-of-all-trades optic.Optics are one of the few areas of the gun space where we’ve…
The temperatures had plummeted for the first time all season. Welcoming the stormy weather, I summited an in-bounds uphill route just as the sun peaked over Colorado’s Gore Range through scattered clouds. I snapped into my ski bindings for an unspoiled powder run, and then squeezed in two more before the resort’s lifts started to hum. By the time I reached 11,000 feet, the wind was harsh and howling. I was wearing Outdoor Research’s new Powderverse Ski Pants and Jacket — thankfully, I was layered for the turbulent conditions. Frozen flakes bounced off my legs. I felt protected against the icy gusts by the Powderverse…

It’s 6:00 p.m., and I’ve just landed in Panama, a place I’ve never been and where my 2 years of half-assed college Spanish courses are doing no favors. I make my way out to the pickup area and promptly get into the wrong Uber, starting my ride to God knows where. This would mark the beginning of my several-day fishing trip to rural Panama, chasing all kinds of ocean species and outdoor adventures at Los Buzos. Perhaps my only touchstone of normalcy and confidence was my pocket knife; I don’t go anywhere without an EDC. For this adventure, I chose…
