Luth-AR recently launched a brand-new aftermarket bull-barrel option for rimfire shooters who build rifles around Ruger 10/22-pattern actions.  Luth-AR’s new Ruger 10/22 pattern bull barrel is turned from a 416 R stainless steel blank and measures 18 inches long. Its muzzle is cut for ½x28 tpi threads while its barrel twist consists of the standard rimfire 1:16-inch, ideal for 40-grain .22 LR cartridges.  Bull barrels are optimized for target-shooting applications for several reasons. First, the additional weight and heft act as ballast towards a rifle which makes them easier to hold steady. Second, the extra weight means that they’re less…

I am a fan of the Ruger Redhawk line of revolvers and have several chambered in .357 Mag., .44 Mag. and .45 Colt/.45 ACP. I also have a Super Redhawk chambered in .454 Casull. As a recent retiree, I now have time to spend time on the range shooting these revolvers. Due to the volume I am shooting, I usually shoot lighter-recoiling ammo in each of the revolvers to preserve my hands as much as anything. While at the range this past weekend, one of the more knowledgeable members of my club came over to visit and see what I…

GAO Report on Weapon Systems Testing In a recent report entitled, “Weapon Systems Testing: DOD Needs to Update Policies to Better Support Modernization Efforts” the Government Accounting Office suggests that the US military adopt iterative testing processes to further modernize its newly adopted acquisition methodology. Common in software development, iterative testing is a repeated cycle of developing, testing, and refining a product in small, incremental steps, using user feedback and data from each cycle to make gradual improvements, rather than aiming for a perfect release all at once. Already adopted to rapidly fill emerging warfighting gaps like Counter-UAS and Electromagnetic…

Photo: Rock Island Auction Company.Ever wondered how rimfire ammo came to be? Here we walk through the history of its development. There’s a cartoon floating around online called “The Invention of Archery.” Three guys are standing beside each other. The first guy says, I really wanna stab that guy, but he’s way over there.Firearms were likely dreamt up along the same lines. Someone hit upon the idea that blackpowder stuffed down a tube, topped with a projectile, and touched off with fire, did spectacular damage downrange. Man, I want to knock that castle down, but it’s way over there. In Europe, cannons…

I am part of a generation when kids carried pocket knives, slingshots, and shot BB guns on the regular. I am not saying there aren’t small pockets where this is still the case, but most kids nowadays just carry around a glowing screen for their entertainment. Thankfully, there’s a little knife-maker in Utah that still wants kids to get dirt under their nails, run around outside until sunset, and carry a trusty pocket folder. “The Lander 5 is meant to be a first knife,” the brand states of its recently launched blade. “The perfect knife for smiley, 12-year-old kids that…
