By Roy Huntington Posted in #Guns Editor’s Note: This article is also featured in the current Winter 2025 print issue of The Armory Life magazine. I shot my first Springfield Armory 1911 for a feature in Guns Magazine about 35 years ago. At the time, Springfield was noted for accurate, reliable and affordable firearms of all sorts. It’s interesting to note things haven’t changed in the intervening years. As a matter of fact, they’ve gotten even better. Over the decades, I’ve had dozens of Springfields come across my desk, and all of them have made me smile consistently when shooting them. I…

Surplus kits, like this vz. 58 kit from Century Arms, are a DIY way to get hard-to-find models while learning about how these firearms operate. The components that make up a “rifle kit” have evolved over time. For several decades, the term chiefly referred to a complete set of parts for a traditionally styled, blackpowder rifle that needed minor fitting, surface finishing and assembly. The rifle kits of recent years, whether comprised of surplus parts or all-new components, are far different animals. Popular modern sporting rifle platforms and legal-to-own versions of legacy battle rifles figure heavily into the kit world…

It has become an annual tradition amongst knife media – the annual Civivi Christmas Knife. Each December for the past many years, WE/Civivi has send me a knife, giftwrapped and ribboned, personalized with KNIFE Magazine emblazoned on the side. This year it is a Civivi Clingman. As you can see, in addition to KNIFE magazine, the Clingman bears the logo of Best Damn EDC, the YouTube channel run by Taylor Martin, who happens to be the knife’s designer. Some of the knives they have sent in Christmas’s past are a pair of Elementums, and a Wharncliffe Banter. I have carried…

With the rise of 6mm ARC, we’ve been asked many questions on what it takes to get started shooting and if the round is perhaps overhyped. To learn more, we reached out to Eric Lee, owner of Sgt of Arms, who is building high-quality, competition-winning ARs, many of which are chambered in 6mm ARC. Q: Eric, can we start with a bit about your background and your company? Eric Lee, Sgt of Arms – I did nine and a half years in the Marine Corps and did three deployments overseas. I was a mechanic, so I didn’t do anything wild and…

A quick note before we get to the post. These are pretty tough times for the gear business. People are making great stuff in every part of the market, but looking at things I can’t shake the sense that we are at a precipice. Tariffs are a huge issue, of course, but the market wasn’t healthy before them. They just might be the last straw before a shake up. Competition from China has not just been strong, it has crushed the US companies. Let’s look at one discrete example—the Spyderco Button Up, a new “budget” release this year that costs…

M4A1 Block I We recently sat down with Chris from clonerifles.com to learn more about the state of building clone ARs in 2022, his take on the cloning community and its reputation, as well as a bit about the website’s background, what parts are getting hard to find, and some details on his upcoming clone shoot. Q: Chris, can we start with a bit about your background and how clonerifles.com came about? Chris, Clonerifles.com – I’m not a cool guy or anything; rather, just a regular person who started getting into guns and building, and I began seeing terms floating…
