KA-BAR has dropped a spiritual successor to the Mark 98, a flipper knife that has been in their lineup for several years. The new model is called the Mark 25, and it features a refined design, different color scheme, and higher-performance blade steel. We wrote “several years” above, but really, the Mark 98 has enjoyed over half a decade in service. It was a notable release in 2018 because it was the first modern flipper folder KABAR had ever attempted. Like many of KABAR’s most beloved releases, the 98 aimed for accessibility, with a sub-$100 price tag enabled by its…

AUSA 25 – FN Multi-purpose Tactical Launcher 30mm (MTL-30) I got some hands on time with an example of FN America‘s new Multi-purpose Tactical Launcher 30mm (MTL-30), one of several designs vying to become the US Army’s Precision Grenadier System, a semi-auto, box magazine fed grande launcher with programmable bursting munitions. The Army’s requirement was caliber agnostic and FN engineers chose 30mm as their “Goldilocks” caliber to achieve the desired effects. The medium velocity rounds produce 45 ft lbs of recoil and shoot pretty flat. With under 3 seconds time of flight to 300 meters, the max elevation for the…

The LIDAR Data mapping Colorado’s Park, Custer, and Fremont Counties was published in 2020, and it raised questions for Eric Gilbertson. The mountaineer and mechanical engineer likes to conduct ground surveys on peaks in his spare time, and his friend Ben Loftin pointed out how close Crestone and East Crestone Peaks’ elevations looked on the LIDAR data. They were damn near identical on the map. Gilbertson couldn’t get that out of his head. “LIDAR data can have errors,” Gilbertson told GearJunkie. “So, if you see a summit thats elevation [is derived] from LIDAR, it could be plus or minus a…
