Without a doubt the combat arms fellas in our military are gunfighters, but they ply their trade overseas. Jim did it at home, in the grim streets of New York city. He was a member of the city’s Stake Out Squad, a unit which was involved in over 250 shootouts. He later became a writer and firearms instructor. He published several books including “Guns, Bullets, and Gunfights”. This book is a practical shooting manual for police and civilian shooters. It…

Girsan, through EAA, has introduced a new variant of its Witness 2311 pistol, the new Girsan CMX Witness 2311. The new CMX Witness 2311’s main feature (or lack thereof) is its omission of a grip safety. Instead, this double-stack 1911’s grip module is smooth. In addition, Girsan added an “Auto Firing Pin Block Safety” internally in order to take the missing grip safety into account. When it comes to competition pistols, some shooters opt to disable the grip safety on their discipline-specific pistols because it can get in the way of their specific two-handed “high up” firing grips. Likewise, a…

In the rigid world of military tradition, true innovators are rare. Even rarer are leaders who respect tradition yet willingly break with convention when the mission demands it. Lieutenant General William Pelham Yarborough was one of those men—a visionary whose creativity, intellectual curiosity, and willingness to challenge orthodoxy when circumstances required, helped define the identity of the U.S. Army’s Special Forces. Remembered today as the ‘Father of the Modern Green Berets,’ Yarborough’s legacy extends far beyond a title; it lives on in the culture, symbols, and mindset of America’s most unconventional soldiers. A Mind Built for Innovation Born in 1912…

Putting my money where my mouth is… I’m Ben. I’m the Product Development Manager for Fine Group. I was recently talking to our Managing Director about the products we have developed. I told him we needed to be sure they were up to the standards of robustness required for use in arduous environments before they went anywhere near serious end-users. He agreed and off I went to Malaysia for a fortnight with the Maddog Adventures crew to go and thrash our kit in the jungle. Nothing beats real world feedback, and the jungle is the harshest environment to test kit…

By Richard Johnson Posted in #History Thundering onto the battlefields of World War II, the M7 Priest married firepower with mobility at a time when the conflict’s outcome hung in the balance. From the deserts of North Africa to the jungles of the South Pacific, the M7 105mm self-propelled artillery (SPA) developed and refined techniques that are still used by the American military today. While these tracked howitzers brought a great deal of versatility to the field, things were not perfect. Many commanders didn’t understand their usefulness and underutilized them. Often, the units were deployed close to…

Ops-Core Started Out As Artisent Back in 2014, I had an opportunity to visit Ops-Core’s new factory in Boston for a personal tour by founder David Rogers. The company started out as Artisent which made head protection like hockey helmets. Due to their location near Natick Labs they ended up doing some cool headborne systems work, including as part of Objective Force Warrior. Eventually, Ops-Core was spun off to do the military work and was later sold to Gentex who continue to innovate in the headborne systems space. Below are some photos I took on that visit. The shelves in…
