Just this past week I was on a “girl’s trip” to Kentucky with two friends. We were gone two days and one night, which obviously meant only one overnight stay in a hotel. We did not pick the hotel at random; it needed to meet certain standards. We needed it to be in a safe area, have a good reputation, two queen beds and one pullout couch, be within 30 minutes of our Saturday destination, have food close by and it needed to have a large parking lot so we could park our huge truck pulling an 18-foot trailer. Once…

Spectre Military Equipment – Protected Compass Pouch While most of us in the US rely on the issue Lensatic Compass, many use various versions of the Silva line. Manufactured from laser cut Cordura, the pouch is reinforced with Curv’s PauaSkin to offer rigidity and protect the compass. Additionally, the compass can be accessed from top or bottom and there’s a tether eyelet inside so you can tie it down. Now this is interesting, it’s available with two different attachment variants. The MOLLE variant features PALS and the tear away variant is backed with Velcro hook which fits directly onto the…

The Black Hills 77-grain MK262 Mod1, arguably one of the most successful 5.56mm cartridges made. There are plenty of great 5.56 rounds out there, too many to mention, but this is the one to beat.Just like the girl next door, 5.56 NATO had it all along and you just couldn’t see it.One of the interesting parts about being a gun writer, in particular for these esteemed pages, is that I get to see some of the interesting behind-the-scenes stuff that goes into creating new guns and ammunition. However, one of the main things that a good gun writer does isn’t…

Setting out from the parking lot of Meadow Mountain, it was bright, sunny, and in the mid-40s — warm for a February ski tour. But that didn’t last long. About halfway to the summit’s ski shack, clouds rolled in, the temperature dropped sharply, and winds started picking up, biting through my fleece midlayer. I donned my Artilect M-Formation 3L shell and felt instant relief. I grabbed the zipper tab — one of this jacket’s most high-tech features — and pulled it up to my chin, sealing in my body heat. Up came the hood, and I continued up the mountain.…

When you think of New York City, it’s easy to imagine all the makings of a concrete jungle — towering skyscrapers in place of mountain peaks and more light pollution than starlight. But amid the hustle and bustle, the city’s parks and green spaces offer a chance to enjoy nature without leaving the five boroughs.  Hike on forested trails or past coastal wetlands. Spot diverse wildlife (yes, more than pigeons and rodents). Or picnic by a babbling stream. And the best part? These pockets of outdoor bliss are all accessible via public transportation.   1.
