Duck hunting is demanding work. Early mornings, gear maintenance, and a long to-do list to execute a perfect hunt are all part of the deal. Usually, you’re doing it in frigid, wet conditions. Sometimes it all comes together, and other times it’s a complete bust. Yes, it’s fun, but anyone saying it’s not work clearly hasn’t spent much time doing it. Due to the harsh conditions, waterfowl equipment has to be perfect. I mean, on the face of it, you plan on crawling around a soaking wet swamp, ideally during the first part of a wintertime cold front. It’s hard…
Photos by Iain Harrison In 2003, we bought a 40-inch plasma flat screen TV for $2,500. The only reason we got it so cheap was because we had to buy the speakers separately. We were so proud of our new purchase that we replaced the family pictures over the fireplace with this new technology, as it was amazingly thin at just 5 inches and weighed as much as my sister. Today, you can get a flat screen for the price of lunch. It’s one of the only things in life that have actually come down in price significantly. Economies of…
Coming from someone who has spent decades wearing waterproof gear, I was surprised to find the FORLOH AllClima Soft Shell Jacket incredibly waterproof and wind-resistant, yet still silent as I tramped all over Montana, field-testing it and trying to find this year’s muley. This jacket ran the gamut of weather with me — sun and sweat, rain, hail, snow — but it balanced breathability with keeping me dry, no matter what the conditions threw at it. FORLOH has done a great job building a functional hunting jacket for all types of terrain and weather conditions, while keeping affordability in mind.…
TNVC did not begin as a company chasing trends. It began as a response to a real operational problem. In the early days of the Global War on Terror, access to reliable night vision technology was extremely limited. Information was scarce, the market was fragmented, and transparency was rare. Questionable vendors and misinformation were common, while civilians had virtually no legitimate access at all. Even for military and law enforcement professionals, acquiring the right equipment often meant navigating delays, conflicting guidance, and costly trial and error. Lives depended on technology that had to work, yet understanding how to properly select,…
As I stood on the doorstep of the South Fork Lodge with the sun on the Eastern horizon, there was a slight bite to the air. Fall was just around the corner, and early mornings were no longer warm and toasty. I threw on the Free Fly Gridback Fleece Anorak Hoodie and sipped coffee while patiently waiting for the guide to pull up. I was in for one of the last good dry fly fishing days of the summer. The hoodie kept me warm that morning, and by midday, temperatures climbed into the upper 70s; it packed down nicely in…
Sneak Peek – Hill People Gear Traveler The upcoming Traveler from Hill People Gear was developed to solve the relatively common problem of how to carry one bag into a hotel room that contains your clothing and a compact weapon in its own compartment. I’ve slept for many nights at a time on a mattress only a couple of inches thick. Sometimes all summer long. Sometimes, I arrive after the sun has gone down, and I throw down camp on whatever approximates flat. If I have spare natural light, I might manage the landscape a bit (pack wedged here; rope coiled there), but more often, I’ve accepted the fact of off-kilter sleep. The line I’ve drawn, as I’ve drawn over now into the third decade, has been camping out of my rig. Here, I will accept no compromise, and lately, I’ve been leaning on…
By Dan Abraham Posted in #Guns The Springfield Armory Echelon is not one of the market’s best 9mm, polymer-frame, striker-fired handguns. It is the best. Springfield designed the Echelon from the ground up to create a handgun the shooting world needed — even if they didn’t know it at the time. I’ve been a big fan from the start, and I have extensive experience with both the full-size Echelon 4.5F and the compact Echelon 4.0C. I will state, with confidence, that Springfield Armory created a “GOAT” (Greatest Of All Time) pistol. The ergonomic Adaptive Grip Texture feels like…
For decades, it was America’s family hauler of choice. Now, is the station wagon dead in the U.S.? Volvo, a brand that has championed the longroof for almost its entire existence, is now out of the game. And that can’t be a good sign for the cargo-friendly car. 73 Years of Swedish Wagons Volvo’s first wagon was called the Duett, and it launched in 1953. It was meant to be used as a delivery van by day and a family car on the weekend, and it became such a Swedish icon that it got its own stamp. The automaker’s final…
Tier-one shooters worldwide know that speed is nothing more than a byproduct of efficiency, and that accuracy is a byproduct of control. Anyone who earnestly trains to be a better on-demand shooter can attest that developing optimal efficiency and control is not as easy as it sounds. One of the most overlooked training elements of developing such elite shooting skills is self-diagnostics. When it comes to mastering true self-diagnostics, most shooters don’t know what they don’t know. Where do you even start? What do you look for? How do you know exactly what needs to be remediated? How do you…
