As I ascended the trail in Northern Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, day hikers flowed past me heading back to the trailhead in the late afternoon sun. My group forged ahead into the backcountry for the night. On my back, the newly designed Gregory Paragon lightweight backpack held all of my gear comfortably as I climbed. The Paragon is designed for backpackers seeking lightweight performance. Despite overloading the pack for this test trip (read: carrying too many heavy beers), it still floated on my back with ease as I hiked the trail, ascending its 1,000-plus-foot elevation gain.  The new partnership with Garmin adds…

By Major John Plaster Posted in #Guns The Vietnam War’s most highly classified special operations were conducted by the blandly cover-named, Studies and Observations Group. SOG’s Green Beret-led recon teams ran top-secret missions deep behind enemy lines on the North Vietnamese Army’s road network in Laos and into enemy sanctuaries in Cambodia. These six-to-eight-man teams — which included two or three U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers — searched for enemy truck parks, supply dumps and basecamps; monitored highways and rivers; tapped commo wires; planted mines, sensors and bombing beacons; assessed B-52 bomber strikes; sabotaged enemy ammunition; seized prisoners…

The National Firearms Act, or NFA, has had a profound effect on American gun culture. One of the ways it has done so is by making short-barreled shotguns subject to registration and a $200 tax stamp. However, there is a bit of wiggle room in the NFA when it comes to shorter scatterguns. If a smoothbore gun does not have a pistol grip, was never built as a shotgun and is over 26 inches long, it is considered to be a “firearm” by the ATF and the NFA rules do not apply to such guns. As a result, the popularity…

GiantMouse recently released a big surprise for slipjoint fans. The Jutland, a folding knife in the EDC/hunter categories, has been transformed into a compact modern slipjoint. The Jutland has been a GiantMouse cast member for nearly three years now. In the company’s diverse lineup of everyday carry pieces and classy users, the Jutland had a distinctive outdoor bent with its rugged mid-size blade and roomy handle. The Jutland actually originated in the GM8, a limited edition, now long-gone release, but even that collector-oriented predecessor had obvious camping/hiking/hunting knife chops. Funny that their new knife is a slipjoint, as Jens Anso…

In March of last year, during dredging work in the Korte Linschoten River in the Dutch province of Utrecht, a medieval sword dated between 1050 and 1150 was found in an exceptional state of preservation. It has now been donated to the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (National Museum of Antiquities) in Leiden. After thorough cleaning and analysis, experts confirmed that it was a complete sword one meter in length, with a hilt featuring a wide crossguard and a nut-shaped pommel—typical features of weapons manufactured between the 11th and 12th centuries. This was a time when the bishop of Utrecht held dominion…

This is a conceptual model that I think about a lot. It has to do with the complexity of use and the impact that has on design and utility. It applies to all facets of life, but I also think it applies to gear. Because I think it is so useful in evaluating gear, I thought I would present it here and reference it in the future in reviews as a shorthand. Here is what I mean by the Jeep and the racecar. The Jeep Wrangler is a vehicle that has not had much change in its design since WWII.…
