The Fischer Speedmax 9 RL BOA is a downright ridiculous cross-country ski boot. If you watched any of the cross-country events in the 2026 Winter Olympics, they were regularly featured. I even saw the non-BOA model on the feet of Norway’s now-legendary Johannes Klæbo and a whole bunch of biathletes. So I certainly felt a bit of impostor syndrome as I cranked up the dials at the Frisco Nordic Center in Summit County, Colo., to put these seriously high-performance nordic skate boots to the test. Sure, I’ve been cross-country skiing for more than 40 years. But that doesn’t mean I’m…

Another hot winter has resulted in some of Canada’s worst avalanche conditions in recent memory. Over the weekend, Parks Canada warned against traveling into the backcountry of Banff, Kootenay, and Yoho national parks due to unseasonal warmth that had created extreme avalanche danger. The danger seemed to improve by Monday, when Avalanche Canada downgraded several areas from “extreme” danger to “considerable.” Avalanche conditions in the Murray Range of British Columbia’s northern Rockies were especially severe. One area included the “biggest avalanche I’ve seen in my career,” said Mike Koppang, an expert with Kananaskis Mountain Rescue. In an Instagram video, Koppang…

Zac Whitmore, designer of the award-winning Civivi Yonder, has partnered with the shop again for a larger sequel. The Over Yonder, as it’s called, brings the winningly simple design of its littler predecessor forward, just scaled up. The first Yonder arrived in 2024, and was warmly received not only by users in general but by the judges at Blade Show in Atlanta, where it took home the Best Buy of the Year award. It is the kind of knife Civivi does best: a no-funny-business user with handsome, albeit understated styling, made to the exacting standards all Civivi (as well as…

With ample public lands, miles of trails, and a temperate climate, Chattanooga, Tenn., is a popular outdoor recreation destination in the Southeast. Unfortunately, this past weekend, it was also the site of two major search-and-rescue (SAR) operations, both on Signal Mountain. The first occurred on the morning of March 21, when an off-duty military service member fell in a rocky area. Authorities confirmed that the injuries resulted in the victim’s death after he was transported to a hospital. The second hiking accident on Signal Mountain occurred later that same day, when a hiker sustained a serious foot injury that made…

Katya Saturday is all up in arms. But the no-nonsense New Yorker isn’t angry — she’s empowered through “sword yoga.” And a steel, 30-inch, double-edged blade, named “Golden Hour,” is her preferred instrument of independence. “It’s a tool of self-expression and freedom,” Saturday, 25, exclusively told The Post. “The sword is like a magic wand that gives me a sense of graceful power.” “When I hold it, I feel like a force of femininity, beauty and strength,” added the force-to-be-reckoned-with, one in the rising army of everyday dynamos leading the sword yoga fitness charge. I think that Lisa has been doing…

From the first memories I have of hunting talk, I was always told to never hunt alone. I was told it was too dangerous and just downright foolish to go into the mountains by myself. So, that’s how I lived my life into early adulthood. Stifled and scared of Mother Nature, with no one-on-one connection to the wild. As you can probably guess from the title of this article, I eventually changed my ways and went against the grain of what I had been told for so long. And to take it a step further, I started backpack hunting alone…

So, the concrete is poured, the bench is built, and we are moving on to installing the vise, creating the spark chute, and a rail for the spark chute. And, because this is about knives, I will show off the wooden prototype that I am marching towards as my first build. Let’s start off with the knife first because, well, knives… Above is picture of my wooden prototype for the first knife I intend to make.
