Forward-facing sonar has changed how a lot of anglers fish, and Garmin just gave its LiveScope lineup a substantial overhaul. The new LiveScope 2 ($2,000) and LiveScope 2 HD ($2,200) systems debuted ahead of ICAST 2026 with better image quality, wider coverage, and a much simpler installation. Both systems now connect directly to a compatible Garmin display and power source, eliminating the separate black box required by previous generations.
For anyone who has rigged a boat with LiveScope, that hardware change alone is a huge perk.
What’s New With LiveScope 2?
The standard LiveScope 2 uses the new LVS44 transducer and, according to Garmin, provides 20% higher resolution and 25% wider sonar angles in Forward, Down, and Perspective modes compared with previous generations.
LiveScope 2 HD, built around the LVS42HD transducer, is aimed more heavily at anglers fishing within typical casting distances. The brand claims it delivers 50% more detail at closer ranges and is optimized for use out to 125 feet. Both systems continue to show fish, structure, bait, and lures moving beneath the water in real time.
The Black Box Is Gone
Previous LiveScope Plus systems paired the transducer with Garmin’s separate GLS 10 sonar module (+$600). The new LiveScope 2 transducers plug directly into compatible Garmin multifunction displays and a power source.
That removes an entire component from the installation.
Modern fishing boats can already be packed with displays, batteries, chargers, trolling motors, and wiring. Cutting out the sonar module should make LiveScope installations cleaner and free up some space.
Garmin also added onboard sensors, including a water sensor that automatically shuts off the sonar when the transducer leaves the water and a built-in water-temperature sensor.
LiveScope 2 HD Focuses on the Water Most Anglers Actually Fish
The HD version may be the more interesting of the two systems for anglers who rely heavily on forward-facing sonar.
Garmin optimized the LiveScope 2 HD for distances out to 125 feet rather than chasing extreme range. The company instead focused on increasing detail at the distances where anglers are casting and actively watching fish react to a lure.
That 50% increase in close-range detail could make it easier to separate individual targets and read what’s happening around cover, bait, and groups of fish.
Forward-Facing Sonar Keeps Evolving
LiveScope helped push real-time sonar into mainstream fishing, and the technology has since become one of the biggest changes to hit competitive and recreational angling.
It has also become one of the sport’s biggest points of debate.
Tournament organizations and fisheries managers continue to wrestle with the role of forward-facing sonar while manufacturers keep pushing the technology forward. LiveScope 2 arrives in the middle of that conversation with better resolution, broader coverage, and fewer components to install.
Winner of ‘Best Electronics’ at ICAST
LiveScope 2 HD also won Best of Category for Electronics in the 2026 ICAST New Product Showcase.
The award adds some (anticipated) industry recognition to a launch that already has plenty going for it on paper. The bigger test will be whether anglers can see enough difference on the water to justify moving on from LiveScope Plus.
