Police Have 'Not Identified a Suspect' in Nancy Guthrie's Disappearance, Despite Reports By Rachel McRady and Danielle Bacher 16

Police are still searching for anyone connected to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-host, Savannah Guthrie. 

Despite reports circulating of potential suspects in the case, a spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department tells PEOPLE on Wednesday, Feb. 4, “We have not identified a suspect or person of interest in this case. Detectives continue to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Mrs. Guthrie. We are also awaiting additional forensic results.”

In a subsequent statement, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos added that “the sharing of unverified accusations or false information is irresponsible and does not assist the investigation.”

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos spoke to NBC’s Liz Kreutz in an interview that aired on the Today show on Wednesday, saying, “We have nothing else to go on but the belief that she is here. She’s present. She’s alive, and we want to save her.”

It has been nearly 72 hours since Nancy’s daughter, Annie Guthrie, reported her missing after she failed to show up at church on Sunday, Feb. 1. Someone from Nancy’s church contacted the family to report that she did not attend Sunday’s service, and after the family searched her home, they contacted the authorities. 

Nancy was last seen alive by Annie on Saturday, Jan. 31, around 9:30 p.m., after they went out to dinner together. 

On Monday, Feb. 2, Sheriff Nanos spoke to PEOPLE about the investigation and the Guthrie family’s ordeal. “They’re just devastated like anyone would be. They are a family and they lean on each other,” he said.

Savannah remains in Arizona with her family as the investigation continues. She shared a statement on Instagram, urging her followers to “please pray.” 

The 54-year-old journalist ended her statement with a plea, writing, “Bring her home.”

Authorities have previously said that Nancy has “no cognitive issues” and is “very alert.” However, she has multiple physical limitations and health issues including high blood pressure, a pacemaker and cardiac issues. She is currently without her daily medication, which she needs for survival.

A trail of what appears to be drops of blood are visible on the front steps of Nancy’s Tucson, Ariz., home, along with the remnants of an apparent Ring camera that has been removed from the front door area, PEOPLE previously confirmed. 

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has not responded to requests from PEOPLE for comment about the apparent blood trail, and it is still unclear whose blood was found at the home.
