Woman Charged After Allegedly Going Over 100 MPH on Snow-Covered Roads with 1-Year-Old Baby 'Unrestrained' in Car By Charlotte Phillipp

A woman in North Carolina was pulled over and arrested after allegedly driving over 100 mph in the snow with a baby “unrestrained” in the back seat.

According to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy pulled over a driver on Saturday, Jan. 31, after he allegedly measured her car driving 103 mph on the state’s Highway 70 near Princeton, about 40 miles outside of Raleigh.

The sheriff’s office said that a 1-year-old was found “unrestrained in a child seat.”

WRAL and WTVD reported that the woman was identified as 24-year-old Kierra Taylor of Goldsboro, N.C. The speed limit where the incident took place was 55 mph, per the outlets.

Although it was originally reported that the woman had a blood alcohol content of 0.22, court documents obtained by the outlets showed that her BAC measured at 0.33 during a roadside test.

Family members later arrived to take the 1-year-old home, the sheriff’s office said.

Taylor was taken into custody and charged with driving while impaired, speeding, reckless driving-wanton disregard, and child abuse, all of which are misdemeanors, the outlets reported.

She was taken to the Johnston County Detention Center and was given a secured bond of $2,500.

The sheriff’s office urged drivers to take precautions by slowing down amid the rare heavy snow in North Carolina.

“During this inclement weather, help keep everyone safe and stay home if possible,” the office wrote.

The state received record-setting snowfall over the weekend, with some areas reporting more than 20 inches of accumulation, per NBC News.

As much as 22.5 inches of snow fell in some cities, and Sunday, Feb. 1, marked the fourth-largest single-day snowfall and biggest snow event in the state since 2004, according to NBC News.

The outlet also reported that more than 160,000 utility customers across the South were without power on Sunday afternoon, including in Mississippi, Tennessee and Florida.

North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein reported more than 1,000 collisions resulting in two fatalities across the state over the weekend, according to WCNC, and officials advised residents to stay off the roads if possible.

“Please be patient and please stay off the roads unless it’s absolutely necessary,” North Carolina Transportation Secretary Daniel Johnson said, per NBC News. “If you do have to drive, slow down and give other cars, our teams and other first responders lots of distance.”
