NEED TO KNOW

  • A 49-year-old woman was found dead in the trash bins at her home after a concerned neighbor called 911
  • The neighbor told police she heard one of the woman’s two teenage boys accuse the other of killing their mother
  • Neighbors said they were “devastated” and “heartbroken” over the woman’s alleged murder

A neighbor in Logan County, Okla., grew concerned after she witnessed two teenage boys fighting in their backyard after not having seen their mother for days.

But after breaking up the fight, one of the teenagers allegedly accused the other of killing their mother — and the neighbor knew she needed to call the police.

Once officers arrived at the Cascata Falls neighborhood home on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 49-year-old Spring Weems’s body was found deceased in the family’s trash bin, according to local News 9, KFOR, and KOCO, which cite police. The outlets, citing police, reported that one of her two adoptive teenage sons was arrested and charged with first-degree murder after officers investigated the scene and spoke with the boys and their neighbor.

“This is just a terrible case,” said Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Hunter McKee told News 9. “Nobody deserves to die as this woman did.”

Citing police, News 9 reported that while one of Weems’ teenage sons was charged in connection with her death, the other was being held at the Canadian County Juvenile Detention Center. KOFO reported that the teenager charged with murder in connection with his mother’s death is a freshman in high school.

McKee told KOFO that investigators are “still looking into the exact motive why this occurred” and what may have caused the mother’s death. “What we have so far is that the woman did sustain injuries that are consistent with homicide at this time,” the police spokesperson said.

The killing left the Central Oklahoma community in shock this week, according to KOCO.

“It’s a close-knit group, and it’s a neighborhood, like something like this has not happened before,” McKee told the outlet. “So, it left a lot of people in complete shock.”

One close friend who KOCO did not identify told the outlet that Weems was the type of person who “would go above and beyond for the cause.”

Another neighbor, Garland Hall, told News 9 that “everybody’s traumatized” in the neighborhood.

“Disbelief, just shattered, heartbroken, a lot of the people here in the neighborhood just can’t believe it,” Hall said.

“I would ask everyone to pray,” the neighbor added, according to News 9. “Pray for that family and particularly because they’re shattered and just pray to God that he would comfort us during this time.”
