A Michigan man is facing murder charges in connection with a triple homicide involving his fiancé and her two sons.

Jacqueline Neill and her teen sons Cameron Kilpatrick and Michael Kilpatrick were found fatally shot in their Grand Rapids, Mich. home on Tuesday, Jan. 27, according to court documents cited by 13 ABC and WOOD TV.

Grand Rapids police responding to a distressed 911 call from 44-year-old Charles Broomfield found the bodies, as Broomfield allegedly said there had been intruders in the home, according to authorities, WWMT, 13 ABC and WOOD TV reported. His 5-year-old son was seemingly unharmed and escorted out of the home.

However, following alleged inconsistencies in his account, Broomfield reportedly confessed to the crimes and was arrested, per WOOD and 13ABC, citing investigators.

In the court documents cited by 13 ABC and WOOD TV, investigators allege Broomfield initially told police he was walking down the stairs in the home when he saw an intruder point a gun at Neill and ran back upstairs to his son.

He allegedly told police a second person followed him upstairs and as they came to face-to-face, he could hear gunshots downstairs.

The second person then took Broomfield’s gun and threatened him to hand over everything he had, Broomfield allegedly told police, adding that the man left the room after Broomfield pleaded with him to spare him and his 5-year-old son, the court documents stated, per 13 ABC.

Broomfield allegedly told police he then heard two gunshots from the vicinity of Cameron and Michael’s rooms.

Investigators at the scene found a lanyard with a photo of Broomfield and his son that read “#1 Dad,” per the curt documents, 13 ABC reported.

Broomfield has been charged with three counts of first-degree premeditated murder and three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, WWMT, 13 ABC and WOOD TV reported, citing court documents and the Kent County prosecutor’s office.

It wasn’t immediately clear if he has entered pleas, and his attorney’s information wasn’t publicly available.

He appeared virtually in court with his attorney on Thursday and said he did not understand the murder charges against him, prompting the attorney to explain it, WOOD TV reported. When asked by the judge if he understood the weapons charges against him, he responded “Yes, I guess.”

A judge denied him bond, citing the serious nature of the crime and concerns that he might be a flight risk.

The Kent County Prosecutor’s Office was not reachable. Grand Rapids police did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for further information.
