NEED TO KNOW

  • An 80-year-old man and his dog were killed in a hit-and-run on Tuesday, Jan. 27, while on a walk in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, Calif.
  • The victim’s daughter said her father was a Ukrainian War refugee who also survived the Holocaust as a child
  • Police said they are looking for the driver, who abandoned his silver Maserati and removed its license plates blocks away from where the crash occurred

A Ukrainian War refugee and Holocaust survivor was killed in a hit-and-run in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, Calif., on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

The victim, Andriy Korshunov, was 80 years old and immigrated to the United States after the start of the Ukraine War, according to KTLA. The outlet reported that Korshunov had also survived the Holocaust as a young child.

“[He] survived history’s darkest chapter, only to have his life taken so suddenly and senselessly,” the victim’s daughter Ilana wrote in a GoFundMe created to help raise money to transport his remains back to Ukraine.

Korshunov and his dog were struck by a Maserati in the 4400 block of Woodman Avenue in Sherman Oaks, Calif., around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night, according to KTLA and ABC 7.

According to the outlets, bystanders performed chest compressions on the man until paramedics arrived and took him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

KTLA reported that Korshunov’s dog was later found dead underneath a nearby vehicle.

The outlet reported that there was video of the incident, showing the driver briefly stop and then speed off after hitting the elderly man.

“He didn’t help him. He just hit and run,” Korshunov’s daughter told KTLA. “He killed two souls. I don’t know what he thinks about this. I mean, what horrible person he has to be to do that. How come?”

The victim’s grieving daughter added: “God sees everything, and God sees what he’s done. He has to do something. First of all, apologize to God for what he’s done.”

Los Angeles police described the car in a news release as a silver 2009 Gray Maserati Quattroporte. Police said investigators located the vehicle “abandoned near the area of the collision” without its license plates shortly after the incident.

One Sherman Oaks resident told ABC 7 they avoid walking down the street where Korshunov and his dog were killed “because people are always racing down the road … so you see accidents here.”

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, per the release.

Ilana Korshunov described her father as a man who “survived unimaginable horrors, rebuilt his life, and carried his resilience with quiet strength for eight decades,” in the online fundraiser.

“He was kind, gentle, and deeply grateful for every day he was given,” she wrote.
