Two men are facing murder charges after an Oklahoma mother died in a sledding accident.
Makayla Mitchell, 31, was riding on a sled being towed behind a car when the rope connecting the sled to the vehicle broke, bringing both to a stop on the road around 11 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, a spokesperson for the Oklahoma City Police Department said in a statement to PEOPLE.
Shortly after, a second vehicle traveling behind the first one struck Mitchell, who was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.
The spokesperson said both drivers, who were evaluated at the scene, allegedly showed “signs of impairment.” They added that “blood draw warrants were obtained and blood draws were completed” for the two men, who were arrested.
Angel Walzier, 22, was driving the first car, while James Kirk, 24, was driving the second one that struck Mitchell, according to the police spokesperson.

Both suspects have been booked on charges of second-degree murder and aggravated DUI, the spokesperson said. Jail records show Walzier is being held on $5 million bail. It’s unclear if the men have entered pleas or retained attorneys to speak on their behalf.
On a GoFundMe campaign, loved ones remembered Mitchell and asked the public for donations that would also go toward supporting her surviving daughter.
“Makayla’s life was cut short in a senseless accident that has left a hole in our hearts that can never be filled,” the fundraiser reads. The mother was remembered as a “vibrant soul who lived for her family.”
