  • Police in Florida have arrested a teen they believe is responsible for a dog’s death
  • The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said the 14-year-old was arrested at school on Tuesday, Jan. 27
  • Authorities said a social media challenge consisting of “door-kicking prank” left a front door broken, allowing a Yorkshire terrier to roam free and get struck and killed by a car

A Florida teen has been arrested after their alleged participation in a social media challenge led to the death of a woman’s dog.

A 14-year-old was arrested at school on Tuesday, Jan. 27 in connection with the death of a woman’s 3-year-old Yorkshire terrier named Spookie, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. The teen was arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges of burglary and criminal mischief after a Dec. 20, 2025 “door-kicking prank” inspired by a social media challenge.

“An investigation identified several juveniles who attended a party in the area that night and went out to play ‘ding dong ditch’ in the neighborhood,” the sheriff’s office said. “A neighbor’s security camera captured audio of the incident. Further investigation led to identification of the defendant who kicked the victim’s door multiple times, forcing it open.”

Surveillance footage aired by WOWT showed two young boys turning their backs to a front door and using the bottom of their shoes to forcefully kick it amid the viral social media “door kick challenge.”

The dog’s owner has since been identified as Dissany Cid of Deltona, Fla.

After Cid’s door was broken from being kicked in, Spookie got out and was later hit and killed by a car.

“I feel like I failed him,” Cid, who was not home at the time, told local news station, WESH.

“If it was my door, I don’t care about my door. Y’all could break my windows, I could care less about that,” Cid said. “But [Spookie] didn’t deserve that.”

Cid was speaking with WESH during an on-camera interview when the news station informed her of the arrest. Authorities had initially told her no one would be arrested, she told the local outlet.

When Cid got the news that police arrested and charged the person they believed was responsible, she appeared to be overcome with emotions, telling the camera Spookie “didn’t deserve to die that way.”

“I need closure,” she added. “This is just something that shouldn’t have happened.”
