New details are emerging about the arrest of Michael McKee, the vascular surgeon charged with the murders of his ex-wife and her new husband.
Federal agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives took McKee, 39, into custody in Illinois just after 10:30 a.m. on January 10 at a Chick-fil-A near his medical office in Rockford.
He was then booked into the Winnebago County Jail, where he is awaiting extradition to Ohio to face charges in connection with the deaths of Monique and Spencer Tepe.
An extradition date has not been released at this time, but McKee is set to appear in court on Jan. 23 for a status hearing if he’s still in the custody of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, court records show.
On Friday, Jan. 16, a grand jury in Franklin County voted to indict McKee on four counts of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated burglary.
He is accused of shooting Monique and Spencer inside their Columbus home just before 4 a.m. on Dec. 30, as their two children, ages 3 and 17 months, slept just a few feet away.
Columbus police sought an arrest warrant for McKee after allegedly linking him to a car that neighborhood surveillance cameras captured arriving at and later leaving the area near the crime scene around the time of the killings.
A subsequent search of McKee’s property led to the discovery of a weapon similar to the one police believe was used to kill the Tepes, Chief Elaine Bryant shared at a news conference on Jan. 14.
McKee invoked his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent after being booked into custody and refused to speak to detectives, police previously told PEOPLE.
The public defender assigned to represent him in Winnebago County told a judge during McKee’s first court appearance on Jan. 12 that he planned to plead not guilty to murder charges while also agreeing to waive his extradition hearing.

McKee, who moved around the country in the 10 years after graduating from medical school, purchased a penthouse condo in Chicago last year.
He had previously been working in Las Vegas, and three months before the killings, was named as a defendant in an amended complaint accusing him of medical malpractice.
Prosecutors said that if convicted, McKee faces the possibility of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
