NEED TO KNOW

  • A surfer is in a “critical” condition after being bitten by a shark at North Steyne Beach in Sydney, Australia
  • The incident is the third shark attack in just 24 hours on Sydney’s Northern beaches
  • A few hours earlier, an 11-year-old boy was rescued after a suspected bull shark “bit his surfboard” at Sydney’s Dee Why Beach, while on Jan. 18, a 13-year-old boy was critically injured after being bitten by a shark in Sydney Harbour

A man is in a critical condition after being bitten by a shark in Sydney, following several similar attacks in the region.

At around 6.20 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, emergency services were alerted that a “surfer had been bitten by a shark” at North Steyne Beach, Manly, in New South Wales, the New South Wales (NSW) Police said in a news release.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was “pulled from the water by members of the public who commenced first aid before the arrival of emergency services,” said the NSW Police. The victim has not been publicly identified.

The man suffered serious leg injuries. He was treated by the NSW Ambulance paramedics and transported to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition, per the release.

“All beaches on the Northern Beaches are closed until further notice, and this will be reviewed on an ongoing basis,” added the NSW Police.

PEOPLE has reached out to the NSW Police for comment, but didn’t immediately receive a response.
