  • The victim’s sister, Kanneshia Penrice, recalled speaking with her one week before the shooting, saying, “Never knew it was going to be the last time I would just talk to my sister”

A Texas woman died after being shot at an apartment complex.

The woman, identified as Shyta Campbell by Houston oulet ABC13, was shot to death around 8 p.m. local time at an apartment complex in Houston on Friday, Jan. 16, according to local outlet KPRC 2. 

Three kids — a 6-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl and an 8-year-old girl — were inside the apartment on the 6200 block of W. Tidwell during the shooting, per KPRC 2, and the kids were unharmed.

Campbell was taken to the hospital in critical condition but died from her injuries, KPRC 2 reported. 

The Houston Police Department (HPD) said the details of the shooting are still unclear but an argument occurred before the gunshots, per KPRC 2.

ABC13 reported that the people arguing moved to the front door where the woman was shot. Neighbors said they heard about 30 gunshots during the shooting, per KPRC 2.

HPD told KPRC 2 that a woman was detained hours after of the shooting, and she was later released from custody. Police detained a man around 2 a.m. the next day.

HPD has yet to publicly identify any suspects.

PEOPLE reached out to the Houston Police Department for additional information on Sunday, Jan. 18, but did not immediately hear back.

Kanneshia Penrice, the victim’s sister, told ABC13 that she spoke with her just one week before the fatal shooting. 

“Never knew it was going to be the last time I would just talk to my sister,” the grieving sister said. “She was like, ‘I’m ready to do what I have to do. I’m ready to move, get on moving with my life and everything.’ ”

Penrice noted Campbell did not live in that apartment and the kids were not hers.

As for the suspect, she said, “I don’t hold no will toward him or anybody else. I’m going to leave it in God’s hands and let him handle it.”
