  • Police in Arizona arrested a driver who allegedly showed “signs and symptoms of extreme alcohol intoxication” after speeding and weaving through a traffic lane
  • Police said the driver was pulled over and and took a breathalyzer test, which showed that they had a blood alcohol level of .293, which was “well over 3 times the legal limit”
  • A 1-year-old child was also found in the driver’s backseat; an investigation found that the driver had been babysitting the toddler at the time

A babysitter who was allegedly caught driving drunk with a baby in his backseat has been arrested.

The Page Police Department (PPD) in Arizona shared in a release on Facebook that a driver — who was not identified — was arrested at around 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 12 after they were allegedly seen speeding and driving erratically. 

The department said that one of its officers saw a vehicle traveling approximately 60mph in a posted 40mph zone. He also witnessed the driver “weaving in its lane of traffic,” per the release.

The officer pulled the driver over and noticed that they were “showing signs and symptoms of extreme alcohol intoxication,” per the PPD. When he inspected the car, he also found a 1-year-old child in the backseat.

When the driver took a breathalyzer test, they allegedly registered a .293, “well over 3 times the legal limit,” the release stated.

Police said in the release that the driver “was supposed to be babysitting while the child’s mother was at work.”

The driver was arrested and his license was suspended following the incident.

The driver was initially charged with aggravated DUI, aggravated DUI with a child under 15 years old in the vehicle, child endangerment and criminal speed, though the PPD noted that more charges could be forthcoming.

As for the toddler that was found in the driver’s vehicle, they were returned to their mother. The case has been referred to the Department of Child Services.
