NEED TO KNOW

  • A man driving a U-Haul truck accelerated down a Los Angeles street lined with people protesting the Iranian government
  • One person was hit but was not significantly injured, police reportedly said
  • The driver was detained and could face a charge of assault with a deadly weapon

A person behind the wheel of a U-Haul truck drove into a crowd protesting against the Iranian government in Los Angeles.

Video of the incident, which occurred on Sunday, Jan. 11, circulated on social media and showed the truck accelerate down a street lined with protestors, who then surrounded the vehicle after it came to a stop.

According to the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and KNBC, police detained the driver of the truck, which hit one person who reportedly did not suffer any significant injuries.

Subsequent videos show protestors attempting to strike the driver after he was removed from the truck by police.

LAPD Capt. Richard Gabaldon told the L.A. Times that the driver could face a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. No ambulances were called to the scene.

Per the L.A. Times, a banner draped on the truck contained the message, “No Shah. No Regime. USA: Don’t Repeat 1953. No Mullah.”

The message is an apparent reference to the deposed Shah of Iran, who was ousted during the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

Gabaldon told the L.A. Times that officials believe the incident stemmed from an altercation in the crowd, and was not an act of terrorism. The suspect reportedly does not have an arrest record.

The protest in Los Angeles occurred as there have been reports of mass demonstrations in Iran.

CNN reported, citing a human rights group, that more than 500 people have been killed and thousands have been arrested since the protests begun.
