  • The Arizona Supreme Court and several surrounding buildings were evacuated on Monday, Jan. 5
  • The evacuation was prompted by a suspicious package found nearby that contained “multiple vials” of “homemade explosives”
  • There were no injuries reported and the case remains under investigation, with no suspect publicly identified yet

The Arizona Supreme Court and several surrounding buildings were evacuated when a suspicious package containing “homemade explosives” was found nearby.

At around 8 a.m. local time on Monday, Jan. 5, the Arizona Department of Public Safety was notified of the package and tested its contents, determining that the package contained multiple vials of homemade explosive substances, local outlet ABC 15 reported. Court hours are expected to resume as usual on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

A letter sent to court staff said “a suspicious package was received by our mailroom and has tested positive for homemade explosives,” per the document obtained by ABC 15.

“The State Courts Building remains closed as additional sweeps are taking place,” the statement continued. “Once that process is completed, the package will be removed for further examination and then subsequent disposal.”
