NEED TO KNOW

  • The 13-year-old girl who was shot twice by her stepfather during the murder-suicide that claimed her mother’s life is speaking out in an interview from her hospital bed
  • “She wouldn’t change the channel to football because she wanted to watch another episode of Percy Jackson,” the 13-year-old girl told Inside Edition
  • She also recalled begging her stepfather, Jason Kenney, not to shoot her after watching him murder her mother, Crystal Kenney

The 13-year-old Florida girl who survived after being shot in the face by her stepfather is speaking out for the first time in a new interview.

On Dec. 22, she watched her mother, Crystal Kenney, and her stepfather, Jason Kenney, fight over what to watch on the television, she told Inside Edition.

The teen, who asked not to be named or pictured, recounted: “She wouldn’t change the channel to football because she wanted to watch another episode of Percy Jackson.”

Jason had been out in his shed watching his favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers, on Monday Night Football, but then decided to come inside to watch the final quarter of the game, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd previously said.

As the fight between Crystal and Jason began to escalate, Crystal instructed her 12-year-old son to run next door and call for help, Judd said.

Her daughter remained in the home, however, and moments after her brother took off, she watched as Jason shot and killed her mother.

Then, she told Inside Edition, he turned around and aimed his gun right at her head.

“I begged him, ‘Don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me,'” she said of those terrifying moments before he pulled the trigger and shot her in the shoulder and then the face.

Somehow, she survived.

“We later learned the bullet in the face hit her on the bridge of the nose, went straight up, and out the top of her head,” Judd explained.

He then added: “That’s a Christmas miracle.”

Her brother was unharmed, as was Crystal and Jason’s infant child, who was in the same bedroom.

Jason then fled in his vehicle to his late father’s home, where he barricaded himself inside a shed and later took his own life as police closed in, Judd said.

Judd also said that while driving, Jason contacted his sister and told her he had done “something very, very bad,” adding that “the next time you see me will be on the news.”

The 13-year-old is making a miraculous recovery, and all three children are now in the care of their maternal grandmother.

A GoFundMe has been created to raise money for the three children.
