High School Football Player Arrested for Allegedly Shooting Teammate Within Hours of Winning Championship By Madison E. Goldberg

A high school football player is facing charges after allegedly shooting his teammate, just hours after the team took home a championship win.

Xavier Mayfield was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a representative for the Dallas Police Department confirms to PEOPLE. The shooting occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m., local time, on Saturday, Dec. 20, at a residence in the 6400 block of Knoll Ridge Drive in Dallas, per police. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

Mayfield, 18, a safety for the South Oak Cliffs High School football team, allegedly shot his teammate in the neck following a championship win, Fox 4 reported. Mayfield is being held on a $50,000 bond in the Dallas County Jail, according to records reviewed by PEOPLE.

Mayfield allegedly told officers responding to the scene that he was in the bathroom on the second floor of the building and getting ready to go to his bedroom. He reportedly told authorities that the victim, who remains unidentified, called his name. When he turned around, “a single gun shot went off from the ARIS ABC Rifle” that he was holding, according to CBS Texas.

Mayfield told officers he began to transport the victim to the hospital and called 911 before leaving the residence.

The Next Generation Action Network, a civil rights organization based in the greater Dallas area, released a statement on Monday, Dec. 22, claiming the shooting was accidental and the victim was a teammate, CBS Texas reported.
