NEED TO KNOW

  • Luigi Mangione was found carrying an apparent to-do list after the 2024 assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson
  • The list included an instruction to “pluck eyebrows”
  • A 911 caller thought Thompson’s shooter was at an Altoona, Pa. McDonald’s because of his recognizable eyebrows

Luigi Mangione was found carrying an apparent “to-do” list after allegedly assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson — with one task including an urgent reminder on self-grooming.

Manhattan prosecutors on Monday entered into evidence notecards that appear to represent a list. Under the date “Dec. 5,” the day after Thompson was fatally shot execution style in New York City in 2024, the notecard reads “buy black shoes (white stripe too distinctive).”

Below that is a bullet point that reads “change hat, shoes, pluck eyebrows.”

Mangione sports distinct eyebrows, so much so that the person who called 911 on him — a manager at the McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa. — told dispatchers he appeared to be the suspect in Thompson’s murder because of them, PEOPLE previously reported. At the time, Mangione was wearing a tan beanie and a medical face mask, but his eyebrows were visible.

The notecard, which also includes a hand-drawn map of Pittsburgh, allegedly found in his bag as he was being arrested on forgery charges in Pennsylvania after presenting police officers a fake ID bearing the name Mark Rosario. He was later charged in New York state and federal court with murdering Thompson.

Another notecard includes a hand-drawn map of the Midwest and a reminder to check for “red eyes” out of the Steel City, perhaps to Columbus or Cincinnati. It also instructs the reader to “keep momentum” because “FBI slower overnight.”

The following bullet point says to “break CAM continuity,” potentially as a means to make it harder for law enforcement to track his movements. It continued, “3+ hrs off cam, exit diff method (ex. Megabus, rail).”

McDonald’s Manager Called 911 About Luigi Mangione — Who Was Recognized by This Distinctive Feature

The final bullet suggests he expected intense media coverage of the shooting, and that he was following it closely. “Check reports for current situation,” it read.

Days later, when he was leaving his arraignment on forgery charges in Pennsylvania, Mangione allegedly saw a scrum of media and said to Altoona Police Officer Stephen Fox “all these people here for a mass murderer, why?” Fox testified on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2025.

But the alleged killer was also apparently concerned for the McDonald’s manager, Fox said.

“He was asking us if we were gonna release her name to the press,” Fox testified, referring to the manager. “He stated it would be bad for her if it got released.”

Asked if he thought Mangione was being genuine, Fox replied, “I guess as genuine as someone who just assassinated [someone] would be,” eliciting protests from Mangione’s lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo.

Mangione is in court as he and his attorneys seek to suppress key pieces of evidence from his upcoming trial, including a 3D-printed handgun and a notebook allegedly containing a “manifesto” recovered from his backpack.

He has pleaded not guilty to state and federal murder charges and is being held pretrial at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

The proceedings will continue on Thursday, Dec. 11.
