A Florida college senior has been arrested after he ordered 1,500 rounds of ammunition to his dorm, where authorities later found an automatic rifle that violates university policy.
Constantine Demetriades was arrested on Wednesday, Dec. 3, after a large shipment of ammunition led to the discovery of an AR-15 rifle in his dormitory at Rollins College, a liberal arts college in Winter Park, Fla., according to FOX 35 Orlando, CBS affiliate WKMG and ABC affiliate WFTV.
A delivery containing 1,500 rounds of 9mm ammunition arrived at the college for the 21-year-old student, prompting campus officials to investigate, WKMG reported, citing a criminal complaint. According to the outlet, officials then searched Demetriades’ room and found the rifle (he shares the dorm with three other students, but has his own room).
The assistant campus safety director found the unloaded AR-15 underneath Demetriades’ bed inside of an “unsecured black carrying case,” along with six magazines — one loaded and five empty, WKMG and FOX 35 Orlando reported, citing the affidavit.
The Winter Park Police Department and representatives for Rollins College did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
Authorities also found a tactical vest and multiple knives, along with a black security vest, ear protection and a pistol storage case were also discovered, according to WFTV and FOX 35 Orlando.
“Any substance or device identified as a weapon is not permitted” in Rollins College residence halls, according to the school’s website.
Demetriades told police that he was aware that weapons are not allowed on campus, per WKMG. Specifically, he said that he “was not under the impression that it was against the law to possess ammunition on campus,” FOX 35 Orlando reported, citing a police report.

The college senior also told police that he had traveled to New Jersey with the rifle for Thanksgiving and returned to campus on Tuesday, Dec. 2, per WKMG and FOX 35 Orlando. He also told police that he has a valid conceal and carry permit in New Jersey, which he was aware did not apply in Florida, according to the outlets.
He told authorities that he did not have any bad intentions, and said he typically stores the firearm — which he claims he only brought on campus one other time — off of school property, at a friend’s home, according to FOX 35 Orlando.

The student also told authorities that “he likes to shoot as a hobby” and that he “used to work as an armed security” at clubs in Orlando, WFTV reported, citing police.
Demetriades was taken into custody and charged with possession of a firearm on school property, according to WKMG. He appeared in court on Thursday, Dec. 4, and a judge ruled that he is eligible for pre-trail release, the outlet reported.

According to WFTV, Demetriades is also facing a student conduct process at the Winter Park college, and he is not allowed back on campus until the matter is resolved.
In a statement obtained by multiple outlets, a spokesperson for Rollins College said, “On Wednesday, the College received a report indicating a violation of our weapons policy. After receiving this information, we immediately initiated an investigation.”
“We quickly identified and contacted the student, who cooperated fully with College officials and local law enforcement as we investigated the matter further,” the statement continued. “The student was arrested and is not permitted to be on campus while we proceed with the student conduct process.”
