A Kentucky man is accused of seriously injuring a child while changing a diaper.

Jorge Jesus Perez Ramirez was arrested and charged on Nov. 26 with first-degree assault and first-degree criminal abuse of a child 12 or under in connection with the Oct. 14 incident, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department.

According to a court memo viewed by PEOPLE, the victim was hospitalized in critical condition after the incident.

According to the memo, after a medical assessment, it was determined that the child’s injuries were “consistent with pediatric abusive head trauma.”

“It was determined that the defendant manifested an extreme indifference to the value of human life by wantonly manipulating the victim in such a harsh way to create an injury indicative of pediatric abusive head trauma while changing a diaper,” the memo alleges.

According to Louisville police, Perez Ramirez is the victim’s mother’s boyfriend.

Perez Ramirez, who has pleaded not guilty, is being held in Louisville Metro Corrections on a $100,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 8.
