NEED TO KNOW

  • A shooting that took place during a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in North Carolina has left at least four people injured
  • Police are currently pursuing three suspects in relation to the tragedy
  • “A night of celebration for our community was interrupted by senseless violence, affecting everyone who was there,” a local police chief said

At least four people were injured in a shooting that took place during a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in North Carolina.

The incident occurred on Union Street South in Concord at around 7:30 p.m. local time on Friday, Nov. 21, the Concord Police Department (CPD) said in a news release shared on Facebook.

“Concord Police, Concord Fire and Cabarrus County EMS personnel were already at the event and responded immediately, providing medical aid and evacuating attendees,” authorities said.

Four gunshot wound victims were sent to the hospital, with three in critical condition. Among the victims were two suspected shooters, per police.

The CPD said in a later update that the shooting took place between two suspects “known to each other.” Police added that it “was not a random act of violence directed at the public.”

The CPD identified 18-year-old Nasir Bostic as one of the suspected shooters. He was one of the four gunshot wound victims, and he remains in critical condition.

Warrants for Bostic’s arrest have been issued for assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury with intent to kill and inciting a riot. “Bostic will be served upon his release from the hospital,” according to the CPD.

The second suspect is a juvenile, who was also one of the four injured. They similarly remain in critical condition.

Per police, the juvenile faces charges for assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, two counts of discharging into an occupied property, inflicting serious injury and inciting a riot.

A third suspect, 17-year-old Keyvyonn Bostic, was charged with accessory after the fact and inciting a riot. He was not injured in the shooting and was apprehended shortly after the incident took place.

Video footage posted online shows crowds of confused people running away from the event after hearing gunshots in the area.

The motive for the shooting is unclear at this time. Police are not considering any other suspects in relation to the incident, they said in their news release.

“A night of celebration for our community was interrupted by senseless violence, affecting everyone who was there,” CPD Chief Jimmy Hughes said in a statement.

“Due to the quick actions of our downtown businesses, the public, first responders and law enforcement, we were able to quickly evacuate the area, prevent additional injuries and identify all suspects involved,” he added.

PEOPLE has reached out to the CPD for further comment.
