  • The second individual who died was a 21-year-old woman, and three others were injured
  • Mayor Ras Baraka called the incident “a dark and devastating day in Newark”

Two people were killed in a mass shooting in New Jersey this weekend.

A 10-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman were killed at the 300 block of Chancellor Avenue in Newark, N.J., at around 7:00 p.m. local time on Saturday, Nov. 15, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The two victims were pronounced dead at the nearby University Hospital, authorities said.

Three others were injured in the shooting: an 11-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man and a 60-year old man, per police.

The three injured individuals are in stable condition, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. The Essex County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

PEOPLE reached out to the Essex County Sheriff’s Office for additional information on Sunday, Nov. 16, but did not immediately hear back.

Newark Police work the scene of a reported mass shooting with multiple victims and multiple fatalities in the area of Chancellor Avenue and Leslie Street in Newark, New Jersey, United States, on November 15, 2025. Numerous people are reportedly shot in the area after 7:00 PM on Saturday evening, with multiple individuals pronounced dead. Authorities do not immediately provide further information. Numerous shell casings line the area where the mass shooting takes place.

Local outlet NJ.com reported that the area where the incident took place is mostly residential and has many single-family homes.

Residents of an apartment building on the nearby Leslie Street were not allowed back in after the shooting, the outlet reported.

One local recalled hearing “a lot of screaming” and over six gunshots.

Mayor Ras Baraka shared a statement on Instagram, calling the incident “a dark and devastating day in Newark.” (He was citing the shooting and another incident that day involving a 2-year-old who died after falling from a 20th-story window.)

“We will not rest until there is justice for the parents and family left behind in unspeakable pain and grief. Newark will work tirelessly with the prosecutor’s office, state-law enforcement and federal agencies to ensure justice is served,” he wrote.

“We urge the killer to turn himself in, as there is no safe place to hide,” Baraka continued.

“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this trauma. Our prayers are with them — and our actions will support them,” the mayor concluded.
