NEED TO KNOW

  • Wellington Delano Dickens III is charged with four counts of murder
  • Authorities allegedly found Sean Brasfield, 18, along with his three half-siblings inside the trunk of a car
  • “I never would have thought this would happen,” Sean Brasfield’s father, who asked for his name not to be used, told WTVD

The father of a teen who was allegedly killed along with his three half-siblings by his stepfather is speaking out.

“I never would have thought this would happen,” Sean Brasfield’s father, who asked for his name not to be used, told WTVD. “I know there are a lot of eyes on Sean but there are three other innocent children who died.”

Sean’s father also told The News & Observer that he was “in total shock.”

His son, he said, had cerebral palsy and was blind in one eye. “He was a great kid,” the father said, The News & Observer reported.

Authorities found Sean, 18, along with his three half-siblings inside the trunk of a car after receiving a 911 call — allegedly from Sean’s 38-year-old stepfather, Wellington Delano Dickens III, on Monday, Oct. 27.

Dickens allegedly “relayed to the call taker he had killed his children,” the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Law enforcement vehicles block Wellington Delano Dickens III's home, where remains were found after Dickens told authorities he had killed four of his children, in Zebulon, N.C., on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025

Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell said Dickens’ 6-year-old child was allegedly killed in May and his 9-year-old died in August. His 10-year-old was killed in either August or September, according to the sheriff. Sean was allegedly killed in September, the sheriff said, according to The News & Observer.

A 3-year-old boy was discovered alive at the Zebulon home, The News & Observer reported.

Sean’s mother, Stephanie Rae Jones Dickens, died in April 2024, according to court filings for her estate.

According to her obituary, she married Dickens in August of 2015.

Sean’s father said he was cut off, along with other family members, from talking to his son after Sean’s mother and Dickens began dating, per The News & Observer.

He last saw his son around 2014, he said, WTVD reported.

Dickens is charged with four counts of murder. He is being held without bond at the Johnston County Jail.

His attorney could not be reached for comment.
