Cheese Factory Owners Were Found Slain in Their Home with Bags Over Their Heads — What Killer Son's Chilling Journal Entry Said By Samira Asma-Sadeque

A Wisconsin man has been sentenced to life in prison more than two years after his elderly parents were found fatally shot in their home.

David Metzig, 72, and his wife Jan Metzig, 71, were found in their Wolf River, Wis. home in March 2023, according to a criminal complaint reviewed by PEOPLE. They were wrapped in blankets and had bags over their heads, per the complaint.

Their son, Erik Metzig, was immediately arrested, according to the complaint, which was shared online by FOX 11.

At Erik’s sentencing earlier this month, one of his siblings said police believe his parents were “naked and shot while in their bedroom,” FOX 11 reported.

During the investigation, police discovered a journal entry where Erik wrote he wanted to “eliminate” his parents and make it look like they disappeared while out on a walk, per the criminal complaint.

David and Jan were staples of the community and were the third generation owners and operators of the Union Star Cheese Factory, according to an online obituary shared in the aftermath of their killings.

The beloved couple were married for 49 years and left behind five children.

Erik had pleaded no contest to charges of first-degree intentional homicide in August 2024, WBAY, FOX 11 and the Post Crescent reported — citing a statement from Assistant District Attorney Amanda Folger and a motion to withdraw the pleas, which was filed earlier this year.

That motion was denied.

At the sentencing hearing earlier this month, a judge sentenced Erik to two life sentences, to be served consecutively without parole, according to the outlets.
