NEED TO KNOW

  • The LAPD said it responded to a radio call and found a deceased infant on the University of Southern California’s campus
  • The incident is under investigation and a cause of death has not been determined
  • USC declined to comment on the incident and referred an inquiry to the LAPD

An infant was found dead in a residential building on the campus of the University of Southern California.

The Los Angeles Police Department tells PEOPLE it responded to a radio call in the 3100 block of McClintock Avenue on Monday, Oct. 27 — the location of USC’s Cardinal Gardens Apartments — where officers “found a deceased full-term infant.”

The discovery came just over an hour after first responders arrived at the same location on reports of a 20-year-old woman having trouble breathing, KTLA reported. She was transported to a local hospital, per the outlet.

Authorities have not said whether the two calls at the location are related.

The baby was just 19 hours old, according to a coroner’s report cited by NBC 4 Los Angeles.

The LAPD tells PEOPLE its investigation is ongoing and added that it is currently considered an “undetermined death pending the Coroner’s investigation.”

USC’s Annenberg Media shared on its Instagram that an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 28, per the L.A. County Medical Examiner. A spokesperson for the school referred an inquiry for further information on the incident to the LAPD.

Cardinal Gardens Apartments is located on the north side of USC’s campus and is across McClintock Avenue from a dining hall.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
