NEED TO KNOW

  • Stephen Geer pleaded guilty to Vehicular Homicide – DUI in connection with a November 2024 crash that killed Golden, Colo. police officer Evan Dunn and injured three others
  • Geer faces between 4 and 18 years in prison following his guilty plea
  • Dunn had responded to the scene of a crash on Highway 58 when he was killed

A Colorado driver responsible for the DUI crash that killed a police officer in 2024 has pleaded guilty.

Stephen Geer pleaded guilty on Tuesday, Oct. 14 to Vehicular Homicide – DUI in the death of Golden, Colo. police officer Evan Dunn, as well as to Vehicular Assault – DUI, the First Judicial District Attorney said in a press release.

On Nov. 6, 2024, Dunn and another officer were stopped at the scene of a crash on Highway 58 when they were struck by a car. Dunn was killed while the other officer sustained serious injuries.

Two civilians were also injured in the crash, according to the release.

As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to drop a felony and two misdemeanors with the condition that Geer serve between 4 and 18 years in prison for the crash, “thereby eliminating the possibility of probation even though he would have otherwise been probation-eligible if convicted at trial,” per the release.

“This stipulation reflects the parties’ acknowledgement that a prison sentence is the only appropriate outcome in this case,” the release states.

Geer is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 21, 2026.

He is currently free on a $250,000 bond, according to 9News.
