  • A young boy, who has not been identified since he is a minor, was arrested on Oct. 10 in connection with a mass shooting that took place in Montgomery, Ala., on Oct. 4
  • The deadly incident left two dead and a dozen others injured
  • The boy faces one count of capital murder, nine counts of assault first degree and three counts of assault second degree, according to the Montgomery Police Department (MPD)

A young boy has been arrested in connection with a deadly mass shooting in Alabama, which resulted in two deaths and 12 others being injured.

On Friday, Oct. 10, the Montgomery Police Department (MPD) announced on Facebook that the child, who was not identified since he is a minor, is facing several charges related to the shooting, which occurred in downtown Montgomery at around 11:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, Oct. 4.

He has been charged with one count of capital murder, a charge that carries a potential life sentence if he’s found guilty, according to Alabama Live. The boy has also been charged with nine counts of assault in the first degree and three counts of assault in the second degree.

The boy was taken into custody on Oct. 10 and placed in the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
A video of the arrest shared by authorities shows the child in handcuffs, as an officer searches his clothes for weapons. The boy — whose face is not shown — is then directed by officers into the back of a cop car.

“Additional arrests are anticipated as the investigation continues,” police said in a news release obtained by PEOPLE. “This progress reflects the swift response, tireless efforts, and professionalism of the Montgomery Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.”

“MPD extends its gratitude to local and federal law enforcement partners for their continued support and collaboration, which have been instrumental in advancing the case,” police added.

MPD Chief James Graboys revealed in a press conference on Oct. 4 that at least 14 people were struck in the shooting, including two who were found dead at the scene, per WSFA 12 News.

Three other people sustained “life-threatening injuries,” while the remaining nine were injured but did not sustain any fatal wounds, Graboys said in the press conference.

The police chief also said authorities believed that there were at least “two parties involved” and they were “basically shooting at each other in the middle of a crowd,” per NBC News.

Shalanda Williams, 43, succumbed to her injuries after being transported to a local hospital, according to the MPD news release.

Lewis Bell Jr., a cousin of Williams, told WFSA-TV that she would be remembered as a peacemaker and someone who was full of compassion.

“The family’s been taking it pretty hard, because she was a great person,” he told the outlet.

Police are asking anyone with information related to the incident to contact authorities.
