NEED TO KNOW

  • Kameron Gilchrist, 25, allegedly sprayed blood that contained HIV into the eyes of two hospital staff workers at the University of North Carolina’s Rex Hospital in Raleigh on March 21
  • He was arrested six months later and is facing two counts of assault or affray causing physical injury to emergency room personnel
  • Gilchrist is being held at the Wake County detention center in lieu of a $25,000 bond and will be back in court on Dec. 8

A North Carolina man is facing two felony charges after he allegedly sprayed blood containing HIV into the eyes of two hospital employees.

Kameron Gilchrist, 25, is now charged with two counts of assault or affray causing physical injury to emergency room personnel, according to a copy of his arrest warrant, which was obtained by PEOPLE.

That offense is a Class H felony in the state, and if convicted, Gilchrist could face up to 39 months in prison for each count.

The incident happened at the University of North Carolina’s Rex Hospital in Raleigh on March 21.

The warrant alleges that while Gilchrist was receiving treatment, he “unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did assault a hospital employee … by spraying HIV blood into the eyes of victim.”

At the time, the male and female were “discharging [their] official duties,” according to the warrant.

As a result of this, the two were exposed to HIV and had irritation in their eyes.

It is unclear why charges were not filed until six months after the incident. The District Attorney’s Office in Judicial District 10 did not respond to a request for comment.

A spokesperson for UNC Rex Health told PEOPLE that the hospital could not comment on employees, but did say: “Unfortunately, violent situations and threats of violence against health workers have become more common across the country.”

Gilchrist is currently being held on $25,000 bond at the Wake County Detention Center.

He has yet to enter a plea and is due back in court on Dec. 8.
