January will be a good month for those in the market for an affordable, hard-working outdoors knife of modest dimensions and capable materials. The Brasa, a compact fixie from designer Thomas Ward, will be releasing just after the new year.

An enduring profile/category/genre of outdoors fixed blade is the bird and trout knife. Knives designated as such are typically on the smaller side, the better to control the entire cutting edge during the delicate work of prepping meat and fish for eating. In more modern times, bird and trout-style knives have been enjoyed by those with no intention of preparing their own food, as reliable backup camp or hiking knives.

Which brings us to the Brasa, which embodies many of the bird and trout knife principles. The drop point blade is 2.83 inches long and tapered nicely, with a run of jimping up near the tip to maximize its maneuverability. The Brasa is a budget-friendly piece, and the 14C28N implemented for the blade steel provides reliable performance in the key areas without breaking the bank.

The Brasa’s handle is a bow shape with a pronounced curve to it. There aren’t any fancy grooves or cuts, just a nice open parenthesis for the whole hand to reside comfortably in. The scales are milled G-10, held into place with two extra large torx bolts, so it looks like the Brasa will be a good candidate for handle modding too, if that’s your thing. It comes with a Kydex sheath and weighs just 1.9 oz.

The only bad news is you’ll have to wait a bit for this one. Boker says to expect it January 5, 2026.
