NEED TO KNOW

  • A 15-year-old girl died after a crocodile dragged her into a river on Sept. 15
  • The reptile dragged the girl, Shivani Kevat, while she was collecting water, and her body surfaced the next morning
  • Kevat’s cause of death was drowning, not injuries sustained in the crocodile attack

A teenage girl was collecting water from a river when a creature dwelling nearby decided to attack.

On Monday, Sept. 15, the 15-year-old girl, later identified as Shivani Kevat, was filling pots with water on the banks of the Parvati River in Rajasthan, India, where the animal lunged at her, The Independent and the Hindustan Times reported, citing Kishanganj police.

The crocodile dragged Kevat, a resident of the Mehatabpura village, into the river, catching the attention of people working nearby, according to the outlets.

Some witnesses even took boats into the water, trying to scare the reptile away and rescue the girl to no avail, per The Independent.

Kishanganj police did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, Sept. 21.

Kevat went missing in the water, prompting a search and rescue operation, but after several hours of unsuccessful searching for the teen, the operation was called off later that night, per The Independent.

The next morning, on Tuesday, Sept. 16, Kevat surfaced naturally. Bystanders spotted her body floating in the river, according to The Independent and the Hindustan Times.

The Hindustan Times reported that a medical team was called to the scene, but the teenager was dead.

According to Kevat’s autopsy, she did not die of injuries sustained in the crocodile attack. Her cause of death was drowning.

Police said there were no injury marks beyond the deep wounds seemingly caused by the crocodile’s grip as it pulled her into the river, per The Independent and the Hindustan Times.

Following the autopsy, Kevat’s body was given to family members, according to the outlets.
