NEED TO KNOW
- Investigators said remains found this week in a wooded area are believed to be Travis Decker’s
- Authorities are still waiting for a 100% confirmation but have shared why they are confident the remains belong to Travis
- The investigation began after Travis’ daughters Paityn Decker, 9, Evelyn Decker, 8, and Olivia Decker, 5, were reported missing by their mother on May 30
More information is coming to light as authorities in Washington state rush to confirm remains found this week belong to Travis Decker — the man accused of killing his three daughters earlier this summer.
Authorities have been looking for Decker since they recovered the bodies of his three daughters Paityn Decker, 9, Evelyn Decker, 8, and Olivia Decker, 5, on June 2 following the girls’ brief disappearance.
The girls were reported missing on May 30 by their mother and Travis’ ex-wife Whitney Decker, who said they had not been returned to her after a court-ordered visit with him.
On June 2, the children’s remains were found at a remote campground in Chelan County, Wash.
The discovery led to an intensive manhunt, eventually leading investigators to remains found this week in a wooded area south of Leavenworth, Wash., at a location less than a mile from where the girls’ remains were found, police said.
In an interview with FOX 13, Sheriff Mike Morrison of Chelan County said that while they are still waiting for a 100% confirmation from the DNA lab, he has strong reasons to believe the remains belong to Travis.
“We do feel pretty confident that there’s a high probability this is him,” Morrison told the outlet.
“Just based off the clothing, some of the personal items we found on scene,” he said, adding that they are waiting for the DNA results before stating with “100% certainty” they belong to Travis.
Morrison said they have rushed evidence from the scene and hope to get results back by Friday, Sept. 19.

While the hunt for Travis was ongoing, authorities had issued murder and kidnapping warrants against him for the deaths of his daughters, who are believed to have died from asphyxiation.
A motive behind the girls’ killings has not been revealed, and when asked if police have determined one, Morrison further condemned the killing.
“It’s irrelevant,” he told FOX 13 regarding a possible motive. “It was a heinous act. We’re certainly continuing to keep Paityn, Evelyn, and Olivia in our thoughts and prayers. That’s what’s been motivating us up to this point.”
