NEED TO KNOW

  • The Los Angeles Police Department tells PEOPLE they are following “several leads” as they continue their investigation into a missing teen, whose remains were found in the trunk of a Tesla
  • The vehicle was registered to rising singer d4vd, who was on tour at the time of the discovery
  • Authorities have identified 15-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez as the victim

Authorities are continuing their investigation into d4vd as several leads and new evidence have emerged in connection with the death of a teenage girl who was recently found deceased in the 20-year-old singer’s car.

In a statement to PEOPLE on Thursday, Sept. 18, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said detectives from the Robbery-Homicide Division served a search warrant to a local address in connection with the death of Celeste Rivas Hernandez.

Rivas, 15, was “the juvenile who was reported missing from Lake Elsinore,” the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office previously told NBC News.

She was found on Sept. 8 in a Tesla that was registered to d4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke.

The LAPD investigated the impounded vehicle after someone complained of a foul odor, PEOPLE confirmed.

“Several items of evidence were recovered and will be analyzed by detectives in the coming days,” an LAPD spokesperson tells PEOPLE. “Investigators are following up on several leads.”

Hernandez was first reported missing on April 5, 2024, the RCSO told the Los Angeles Times.

Authorities have not disclosed further information about Rivas or if she had any possible connection to d4vd, who started out as a YouTube creator before he rose to fame as a musician.

One of his most notable songs was a 2022 single titled “Romantic Homicide.”

“In the back of my mind (whoa-oh), you died (whoa-oh) / And I didn’t even cry (whoa-oh), no, not a single tear / And I’m sick of waiting patiently (ooh-ooh) / For someone that won’t even arrive,” he sings in the hit song.

He later adds, “In the back of my mind, I killed you / And I didn’t even regret it, I can’t believe I said it / But it’s true / Do I love you? No, I hate you.”

d4vd explained the meaning behind the lyrics in an on-camera interview with Genius, explaining that “the storytelling aspect” was inspired by “the lyrics that came before” the hook.

“It builds up to the big moment where she died in the back of my mind,” dv4d said. “I didn’t kill her physically, but in the back of my mind, she died.”

He added, “I’ve seen people online take different meanings and different interpretations from that one part of the song where it’s like, it’s their past selves that’s dying, and they’re not even crying about it because they’re evolved or become better people, or have killed addictions and other different stuff like that.”

d4vd was in the midst of his Withered World Tour in North America when Hernandez’s body was found. He has not yet publicly commented on the situation, but his representative told NBC Los Angeles that his client is “fully cooperating” with authorities.

After Rivas’ body was found, her family broke their silence, launching a GoFundMe titled, “Help Lay Celeste Rivas Hernandez to Rest,” on Sept. 18.

“As many of you know, Celeste Rivas Hernandez has been identified as the body found last week,” organizers Esmeralda Lozano and Gisel Vera wrote. “She was a beloved daughter, sister, cousin, and friend. Her family is heartbroken and devastated by this tragic loss. They are seeking help to lay her body to rest. Any funds you are able to donate are greatly appreciated.”

They signed off as “The Rivas Hernandez family.” Lozano and Vera also shared that her service was scheduled for Oct. 5.

The investigation remains ongoing, LAPD tells PEOPLE.
