NEED TO KNOW

  • Worlds of Fun amusement park in Kansas City was evacuated following reports of gunfire on Saturday, Sept. 13
  • Videos circulating on social media appear to show panicked visitors fleeing the park during the evacuation
  • “Everyone was screaming … and then started running,” one witness said, per the local news outlet KSHB 41 Kansas City

A popular amusement park in Missouri was evacuated after fears allegedly arose that shots were being fired.

At around 9:20 p.m. local time on Saturday, Sept. 13, an off-duty officer received a report of a person hearing “possible shots fired” at the Worlds of Fun amusement park in Kansas City, KCTV5 News, Fox 4 Kansas City and KSHB 41 Kansas City, citing the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD).

An evacuation was issued at the theme park as police and other agencies made their way to the scene, according to Fox 4 Kansas City.

The reported sound of gunfire came during the opening night of the park’s Halloween Haunt event. The police and local agencies responded to the scene, but found no evidence that indicated shots had been fired, according to the outlets.

There were “multiple disturbances” and “several juveniles fighting” at the park, which officers broke up on arrival at the scene, KSHB 41 Kansas City reported.

In one video posted on Facebook, a panicked woman can be seen running out of the park along with several other visitors as screams are heard in the background.

“Oh my god. Everybody has to run,” the woman said. “Come on, run, run. Oh my God, I’m f—ing scared. Everybody is just starting to run.”

The video’s caption read, “Authorities are securing the area, and visitors are being directed out for safety.”

Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, Missouri, has been a local staple since 1973.

Witness Mariah Caples told KSHB 41 Kansas City, “Everyone was screaming and yelling then started running. A lot of cops started coming and yelling at us to get out of the park.”
