One of the students wounded remains in critical condition, the paper reported.

The shooting was reported at 12:24 p.m. MT, sheriff’s office spokesperson Jacki Kelley said. More than 100 law enforcement personnel responded to the high school following reports of the shooting.

“My heart is with the students, families, and entire Evergreen community after today’s tragic shooting,” Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said in a post on X. “No young person should have to carry this kind of trauma, and help is available.”

The Post spoke to a 16-year-old student who said he heard gunshots and ran out of the school.

“I heard gunshots right behind me,” Ethan Ramirez told the paper.

Ramirez further said he saw who he believed was the shooter.

“He was walking, he wasn’t running,” the teen reportedly said. “I saw him shooting right at us.”

Ramirez said he and other students hid in a stranger’s home after hearing the shots.
