NEED TO KNOW

  • Bryan Kohberger appears in three new selfies taken after he murdered four University of Idaho students, which were obtained by NewsNation
  • One of the images shows Kohberger with a cut on the knuckle of his ring finger
  • That ring finger is the same finger on which Kohberger wore a bandage in a selfie taken hours after the murders

Bryan Kohberger appears pale and gaunt in a series of previously unseen selfies obtained by NewsNation.

Kohberger is seen mugging for the camera and shirtless in the images, which were reportedly taken after he murdered four University of Idaho students.

The convicted killer, 30, is also seen with a fresh wound on his hand in the images — on the same finger he had bandaged in the selfie he took just a few hours after the murders.

The injury is seen on the knuckle of Kohberger’s ring finger in a shirtless photo, in which he is posing while saluting.

It is not clear if Kohberger sustained this injury during the murders.

Authorities previously released a selfie Kohberger took in the bathroom of his apartment in Washington state after committing the murders in Moscow, Idaho, in the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 2022.

Kohberger is seen in that image with a Band-Aid over the knuckle on his ring finger.

A number of doctoral candidates who were in the criminology program at Washington State University with Kohberger told the Idaho State Police that they noticed his injuries in classes that took place after the murders.

A person who told police she sat just three feet away from Kohberger described his injuries after the murders to police as “bruised knuckles,” “redness halfway up the back of the left hand from his knuckles,” and “a cut on his ring finger,” according to a summary of her interview with the ISP, which was obtained by PEOPLE.

However, others told the ISP that some of these injuries may not have been new.

One classmate called the Moscow Homicide tip line to report she had observed Kohberger with bloody knuckles “just prior to the homicides.”

That student added that “the hands looked really beat up like he was hitting something.”

A WSU professor who had Kohberger as a student told police she “noticed a bandage on Kohberger’s middle and ring fingers of his right hand,” and that when she asked how it happened, Kohberger said that “it was from a silly accident that happened indoors.”

That teacher did not believe the injury could “have happened indoors because it looked like it had been scraped on asphalt,” but she said she “believed” that Kohberger had sustained that injury prior to the killings.

Several classmates told police that Kohberger said he sustained the injuries while boxing or in a car accident.

The other two selfies include an extreme close-up of his face — with his teeth bared and upper lip tucked — and a shirtless shot in which he squints and flexes.

Investigators found a number of half-naked selfies of the convicted killer on his cellphone, digital forensics expert Heather Barnhart, who assisted prosecutors in the case, previously told PEOPLE.

“Lots of him posing half-naked in the mirror while flexing,” Barnhart said.

It is unclear what, if anything, Kohberger did with these images of himself because there is no evidence of him ever sending them to anyone, Barnhart added.

“Very vain, like American Psycho,” Barnhart noted of the photo collection.

Meanwhile, an inmate who spent time with Kohberger in jail told police that the killer’s favorite movie is American Psycho.

The motive behind the murders is still a mystery, almost three years after Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were brutally stabbed to death in the middle of the night by a complete stranger.
