When it comes to expensive rifles needing maximum protection, nobody’s buying a soft case.

Pelican hard cases have been the industry gold standard for many years, but now they’re being upgraded in the Re-Set package.

A short bit of lore before we get rolling. I recently finished up the M110-ish article series. While the base rifle is a PSA Sabre-10, I had some custom work done to the barrel to add an M110 gas block.

By the time I finished, I had a Leupold MK4 LR/T 3.5-10x scope, a Paq-4 IR laser, a Griffin Armament MGL-110 suppressor, and a custom SpiteWerx adjustable A1 buttstock. What started as a fun project ended up being a retirement fund.

So I needed grade-A protection. I picked up a Pelican 1750 case, one of the few that’s long enough to hold this rifle with the suppressor affixed, at over 48″ long. This keeps my gun safe in the bed of my truck rumbling around the mountain roads, on commercial flights, and anywhere else I want to take it where it’s not carried on my body. A contact at Pelican offered to send me the new Re-Set upgrade package for this case so I can take a look at it and offer my feedback.

The main shortcoming of traditional hard cases isn’t a lack of protection, but a lack of customizability. The usual eggshell foam can be cut to fit the gun or accessories, but only once. The Re-Set system looks to improve that. Let’s examine the tech specs, then dive into the Re-Set system and explore how it transforms traditional hard cases.

Tech Specs

  • Available for Pelican 1700, 1720, 1750 cases
  • Series of plastic grids holding high density foam pegs
  • Secure – Designed to deliver a precise fit, preventing shifting or damage during transport, even in extreme conditions.
  • Durable – Engineered with high-density foam to withstand repeated adjustments and heavy use, ensuring it holds up for every mission.
  • Quick and Easy – Effortlessly push and pull pegs to quickly change the configuration, even on the go.

As the specifications state, plastic grids hold high-density foam pegs. It’s really a simple system. There are a few longer pegs that hold the grid slightly away from the interior of the case.

This allows the normal-length pegs to be slid up or down, enabling you to customize the inside of the case fully. Change scopes? Add a suppressor? You can move the pegs up and down tons of times without damaging them. If you do, Pelican includes some spares.

Install:

This is super easy. Open the case and discard the bottom foam. There are scant instructions here; you don’t really need them. The extra-long pegs are inserted into the plastic stand-off collars to prevent them from bending. Spread those out on the bottom of the three plastic grid panels, and then drop the panels into place in the 1750.

Now you get to push all the rest of the normal length pegs into place. This took me a couple minutes. Once they’re all even, place your rifle on top. This gives you the outline of all the pegs you need to push down. This took another minute or two to get right.

Pelican Re-Set

Since then, I’ve swapped scopes and removed a couple of accessories. I was able to reconfigure the Re-Set plugs in a matter of seconds, meaning that even if this case takes a hard hit, the rifle can’t slide to the sides or up and down in the case.

I even went back and adjusted a few plugs to make the fit even tighter. If I want, I can adjust the Re-Set plugs again to make room for a spare mag, another accessory, or even a totally different gun.

Pelican Re-Set

This will come in handy when my firearms ADHD inevitably causes me to fall in love with something else next month.

Bottom Line

This isn’t a complicated product, and it doesn’t need a thousand-page tome to explain. If you have a Pelican 1700, 1720, or 1750 case and want an upgrade that’s both functional and aesthetic, the Re-Set system is definitely worth considering. The Re-Set kit for the 1750 runs $229.95. If you’re looking to upgrade your jumbo Pelican case, take a look.
