NEED TO KNOW

  • Steven Cook, 20, of England, vanished on his first night in the resort town of Malia in Crete, Greece
  • He was traveling to the coastal town with friends
  • It was his first trip without his parents, say police

Steven Cook vanished on the Greek island of Crete during his first trip abroad without his parents in 2005.

Now, 20 years later, police have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of the 20-year-old University of Liverpool student from the town of Sandbach, the BBC reports.

Cook’s brother, Chris Cook, 50, told the BBC that his family learned of the arrest shortly after Sept. 1, the 20th anniversary of Steven’s death.

He and his family aren’t sure what to expect now that someone has finally been taken into custody.

“There might be a legal sense of justice, as in somebody is found innocent or guilty,” Chris told the BBC. “But I don’t think anything can pay back and compensate for everything that’s happened to us as a family and what we’ve been through over the past 20 years.”

In 2005, Steven traveled to the lively resort town of Malia in Crete with his friends, according to the Liverpool Echo.

On his first night on vacation, he and his friends went bar hopping, according to the BBC.

He was last seen leaving a bar alone and asking for directions back to his hotel, police said, according toThe Guardian.

In 2017, workers found his skeletal remains while cleaning the bottom of a well in Malia, The Guardian reported.

They also found a disposable camera and a belt in the well. It is unclear whether those items are believed to be connected to Steven’s death.

Cheshire Police said it was aware of “developments” in Steven’s case, including that a murder charge had been filed, the BBC reports.

A judge in Greece has forwarded the case to the Heraklion Jury Trial court, where a hearing is scheduled to take place on Oct. 21, according to the BBC.

The Cheshire Constabulary and police in Crete did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
