NEED TO KNOW

  • Sarah Carroll was studying to be a physician assistant, according to her family
  • She was shot dead by a man who then died by suicide, per police
  • Her family claims the man was her ex-boyfriend and had been harassing her for months leading up to the shooting

A Michigan family is mourning the loss of 20-year-old Sarah Carroll, who was one of two people killed in what police say was a murder-suicide.

Carroll was found dead by Westland, Mich., authorities responding to a call about the shooting on Saturday, Aug. 30, the City of Westland Police Department confirms to PEOPLE in a statement.

Police did not name the deceased but the victim’s family has identified her as Sarah Carroll, according to several news outlets including WXYZ, FOX 2 and Local 4.

Authorities say the shooter called 911 and said he had shot his ex-girlfriend, the Westland Community News reported.

The man then shot himself and was found deceased next to Carroll, per police.

Police did not respond to PEOPLE’s request confirming this information.

A witness told Westland Community News that their son was at the apartment complex Saturday night when Carroll reportedly confronted her ex-boyfriend before he pulled out a shotgun, shot her and turned the gun on himself.

Carroll’s family confirmed the man was her ex-boyfriend and said he had been stalking her for the last two months, FOX 2, WXYZ and Local 4 reported.

She was in the process of obtaining a protection order against him, her mother Jennifer Thomas told the outlets.

Sarah, who was studying to be a physician assistant, is being remembered for being career-driven and funny, Local 4 reported.

“She was loved by everybody. Everybody she met,” her father James Carroll told the outlet. “She was wonderful. I’m going to miss my baby.”

Jennifer remembers Sarah as being full of life.

“She was alive, she was funny, she was smart, she had everything going for her,” she told the outlet.

A GoFundMe has been set up to assist with her funeral services.

“Sarah was so full of life — smart, brave, strong, and with a smile that lit up every room she entered,” read part of the fundraiser. “She was only just beginning her journey, and losing her at such a young age is something no family should ever have to go through.”
