A series of new measures introduced in the Michigan legislature would repeal the Great Lakes State’s so-called “red-flag” law, which allows the government to confiscate citizens’ firearms without due process.
According to a state alert posted by Gun Owners of America, HB 4138, 4139 and 4140, introduced by state Rep. Jim DeSana would wipe the red-flag law off the books. And more than 20 Republican lawmakers have already signed on in support.
“The Red Flag laws are a direct violation of our Second Amendment rights,” Rep. DeSana said in a Michigan House Republican news release. “These poorly written laws strip away our rights without the opportunity for individuals to defend themselves.”
Unfortunately, opponents of the measures have allowed them to stall, prompting GOA to encourage members to contact lawmakers and solicit their support. Currently, leaders in the House Judiciary Committee have not allowed a hearing on any of the bills.
“Let’s be clear: Red-flag laws trample due process and turn innocent gun owners into criminals overnight,” the alert stated. “Every Republican in Lansing voted against this scheme when it passed in 2023—and not one of them paid a political price for it. In fact, gun-grabbing Democrats were the ones who lost their seats.”
Despite that, Republican leaders continue to drag their feet, rather than whole-heartedly embracing the measures as they should.
“It’s time to remind them that Michigan gun owners are watching and that we expect action,” the alert stated. “Please contact Judiciary Chair Sarah Lightner and Vice Chair Brian BeGole today and demand hearings on Rep. DeSana’s repeal bills.”
As the GOA alert explained, it’s time for Michigan lawmakers to start turning the table on the state’s current democrat leadership, which has done so much damage in the past few years.
“This is our chance to start rolling back Governor Whitmer’s gun control agenda—but only if we apply enough pressure,” the alert stated. “GOA and Great Lakes Gun Rights are leading the charge, but we need every patriot in Michigan standing with us.
“Together, we can force Lansing to act and put Red Flag laws where they belong — in the trash heap of history.”
GOA provided within the alert an email template for members and other interested parties to use to contact party leaders about the measures.
“Red Flag laws strip citizens of due process, punish the innocent and hand unchecked power to the government,” the email states. “They have no place in Michigan, and the people who put Republicans in office expect you to do more than simply vote ‘no’—we expect you to lead the charge to undo this injustice.
“I am demanding that you immediately schedule hearings on these bills. Failure to act will not go unnoticed by the grassroots, who are watching closely and are ready to hold elected officials accountable.”
