NEED TO KNOW

  • Thirteen children have been found living in “deplorable” conditions in a home in Ohio, according to reports
  • Police said the children appeared “very filthy” and had multiple bug bites on their bodies, while there was no functioning toilet or shower in the property and allegedly no food in the kitchen, according to charging documents
  • The children’s parents — Angel Oliveri and Cassandra Lambert, and Lambert’s sister Angel Lambert — have reportedly been charged with endangering children and the kids have been removed from their care

Police have released bodycam footage showing the living conditions 13 children in Ohio were living in before they were removed from their parents’ care, according to reports.

On Aug. 10 just after 6:30 p.m. local time, officers from Toledo Police Department initially responded to reports of an animal complaint at a house in the 300 block of Raymer Boulevard in Toledo, per the Toledo Blade newspaper.

At the property, officers then reportedly found 13 children under the age of 14 living in “deplorable conditions that put their heath and safety at risk,” the paper reported, citing officials.

According to local ABC-affiliated station WTVG, charging documents found that the children had multiple bug bites on their bodies and there were multiple insect infestations, as well as there being human feces on the floor, no functioning toilet or shower and allegedly no food stored in the kitchen.

Animals were also found to have urinated and defecated on the floor, the station reported, citing the documents.

According to the Toledo Blade, the children “appeared very filthy, as if they had not bathed in days,” citing the affidavits.

Suspect Angel Lambert, 32, was charged with eight counts of endangering children, per the Toledo Blade, while Cassandra A. Lambert, 27, and Angel Oliveri, III, 25, were charged with five counts of endangering children. All three suspects, who pleaded not guilty and have since been released on their own recognizance (RoR), live at the Toledo address, per the outlet.

In the recently released police bodycam footage, one officer can be heard saying, “What is that stench?” before entering the house, according to a clip shared by local CBS-affiliated station WTOL.

Multiple children can also be heard chatting and introducing themselves in the video.

“I need your opinion, I need you to go inside and just look around, and tell me what you’re thinking about this entire set up in here,” an officer then asked another officer in the footage.

“Do you think these living conditions are acceptable for children?” an officer asked Oliveri in the clip after getting his details, as he insisted, “No I don’t.”

“It’s one thing if adults want to live in filth, in their own filth, and not take care of themselves. You’re adults, if you want to live that way, these kids didn’t sign up for that,” the officer added.

According to Cleveland 19 News, Oliveri shares five of the children with his fiancée, Cassandra Lambert, while the other eight living in the home belong to Lambert’s sister, Angel.

The outlet stated that the three suspects have been ordered not to contact any of the children, adding that children’s services confirmed the 13 kids had been removed from their parents’ care.

A family member of the kids told WTVG’s 13 Action News that the children are now staying with another family member and are being well taken care of.

The Toledo Police Department, Lucas County Children Services and the Toledo Municipal Court did not immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for additional information.
